APC Minister Admits Threat Against Journalist

Deputy Minister of Employment and Social Security has told journalists in Freetown that he will "hit" journalist Melvin Rogers of Radio Wanjay and the latter "will not survive the hit". This public pronouncement of Minister Moijueh Kaikai in a press briefing summoned on Tuesday 2nd March 2010 at his New England Ville office, lends credence to an earlier allegation of Rogers against the Minister in an interview with the Awareness Times Newspaper.

Melvin Roger told the Awareness Times Newspaper over the weekend that the Minister in question telephoned him and threatened his life, following a report he filed on radio 98.1 that the Minister was publicly campaigning for the APC candidate in the just concluded Lugbu Chiefdom bye-election; an act that was in total contrast with President Koromas warning.

Although Minister Kaikai failed to clearly define the word "hit" or defend the allegations levied against him, he further threatened to institute a legal action against Melvin Rogers, plus the filing of reports against the journalist to the Independent Media Commission, the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists, and the Independent Radio Network.

"I will continue to pursue Melvin Rogers until he loses his job as Station Manager of Radio Wanjay in Pujehun" the Minister emphasized.

He also accused Melvin Rogers of being a politician of the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP), who is hiding behind the cloak of journalism.

The Minister alleged that Melvin Rogers was carrying SLPP supporters onboard his vehicle from one location to another prior to the election under review.

Melvin Rogers has however presented a recorded tape to the Awareness Times Newspaper which he claimed was the telephone conversation between him and the Minister. In the tape, the alleged voice of the Minister sounded furious as the threats were being levied against the journalist.

He denied the SLPP connection allegations made against him by the Minister, and stated that the Minister was only trying to clear his head from the mess he found himself. "I was only carrying five accredited IRN journalists onboard my Benz during the entire process" he informed.

Melvin Rogers called on concern stakeholders to come to his aid and save his life. He confessed that his life is at stake since he has received such a threat from a high profile government functionary.
