PRESS RELEASE

THE MINISTRY OF FINANCE AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ANNOUNCES FOR THE INFORMATION OF THE GENERAL PUBLIC, THAT THE GOVERNMENT OF SIERRA LEONE HAS REMITTED A TOTAL OF LE 11,987,300,000 (ELEVEN BILLION, NINE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-SEVEN MILLION, THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND LEONES) TO THE BANK ACCOUNTS OF LOCAL COUNCILS FOR THE DELIVERY OF SERVICES FOR THE DEVOLVED SECTORS. THIS AMOUNT REPRESENTS THE FIRST QUARTER ALLOCATION TO LOCAL COUNCILS FOR FIRST QUARTER 2010.

ON RECEIPT OF THESE FUNDS, LOCAL COUNCILS MUST TRANSFER FUNDS TO THE VARIOUS DEVOLVED SECTOR ACCOUNTS AS PER ATTACHED SCHEDULE, AND DISPLAY DETAILS OF SUCH DEVOLVED SECTORS INCLUDING AMOUNTS, ON COUNCILS NOTICE BOARDS, AND OTHER PUBLIC PLACES IN ORDER TO PROVIDE ACCESS TO THIS INFORMATION BY THE GENERAL PUBLIC.

THE FOLLOWING PROVIDES DETAILS OF THE AMOUNTS PAID TO THE COUNCILS PER FUNCTION:

THE MINISTRY OF FINANCE AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ANNOUNCES FOR THE INFORMATION OF HEAD TEACHERS, THE SIERRA LEONE TEACHERS UNION, PARLIAMENTARIANS, PARENTS, AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC, THAT THE GOVERNMENT OF SIERRA LEONE HAS REMITTED A TOTAL OF LE 3,840,957,000 (THREE BILLION, EIGHT HUNDRED AND FORTY MILLION, NINE HUNDRED AND FIFTY-SEVEN THOUSAND LEONES) TO THE BANK ACCOUNTS OF THE COUNCILS MENTIONED BELOW, FOR THE PAYMENT OF SCHOOL FEES SUBSIDY FOR GOVERNMENT, GOVERNMENT ASSISTED, AND COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOLS, FOR THE SECOND TERM OF THE 2009/2010 ACADEMIC YEAR.

COUNCILS WILL IN TURN PAY THE AMOUNTS TO THE INDIVIDUAL BANK ACCOUNTS OF THE BENEFICIARY SCHOOLS. THIS PAYMENT REFLECTS THE INCREASE OF THE SUBSIDY FROM LE2000 PER PUPIL PER TERM TO LE3000 PER PUPIL PER TERM APPROVED BY GOVERNMENT AND IS BASED ON THE DATA CERTIFIED BY THE RESPECTIVE CHAIRPERSONS/MAYORS OF THE LOCAL COUNCILS.

ON RECEIPT OF THESE FUNDS, LOCAL COUNCILS MUST DISPLAY THE DETAILS OF AMOUNTS, NAMES, ADDRESSES, ENROLMENT AND OTHER DETAILS PROVIDED OF THE BENEFICIARY SCHOOLS, ON COUNCILS NOTICE BOARDS, SCHOOLS NOTICE BOARDS AND OTHER PUBLIC PLACES IN ORDER TO PROVIDE ACCESS TO THIS INFORMATION BY THE GENERAL PUBLIC.

SINCE THE INCREASE IN THE SUBSIDY IS MEANT TO REDUCE THE COST OF PRIMARY SCHOOLING, PARENTS AND GUARDIANS OF PRIMARY SCHOOL- GOING CHILDREN IN THE AFFECTED SCHOOLS ARE ADVISED NOT TO PAY ANY EXTRA CHARGES OTHER THAN THOSE APPROVED BY THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, YOUTH AND SPORTS.

PAYMENTS OF SCHOOL FEES SUBSIDIES FOR THE THIRD TERM OF 2009/10 WILL BE BASED ON DATA VALIDATED BY THE CONSULTING FIRMS CONTRACTED FOR THE PURPOSE.
