Conservation of the Sierra Leonean Western Area Peninsula Forest Reserve (WAPFoR) & its Watershed

Welthungerhilfe (formerly German Agro Action), a German Non-Government Organisation, has received a European Union grant for an action entitled: "Conservation of the Sierra Leonean Western Area Peninsula Forest Reserve (WAPFoR) and its Watershed".

The action intends to introduce participatory processes in decision making on the sustainable use of natural resources to reduce rural poverty in the Western Area Peninsula (WAP) and to conserve and manage sustainably the Sierra Leonean Western Area Peninsula Forest Reserve (WAPFoR) and its Watersheds for the benefit of the adjacent population, particularly the poor.

The action has a strong focus on participatory land use planning ultimately leading to a new forest demarcation area, developing training programs for key planners and managers in the designs and implementation of incentive measures to protect the reserve. Furthermore it will promote alternative income generation for adjacent villages to reduce pressure on the forest, encourage traditional practices and knowledge beneficial to the sustainable management and utilization of forest biodiversity, and investigate alternatives to decrease/replace the use of firewood for fish smoking and facilitate the inclusion of private business sector for eco-tourism. The action will also organize a preparatory study to investigate the potential of the project to tap carbon finance.

Welthungerhilfe seeks qualified and motivated personnel for this new rural development project which is covering Western Area Peninsula Forest Reserve (WAPFoR). Project activities will commence as soon as possible and project duration is until 31.12.2013. Qualified women are encouraged to apply for the announced positions.One (1) Geographer

Tasks: Plan and implement the remote sensing of the reserves boundaries (areal or satellite); take lead in the planning and management of the study for the zoning of the reserve, the planning, management and implementation of the new demarcation and management plans of WAPFR and the improvement of the technical and managerial capacities of key planners; set up and manage the GIS-database; contribute to the piloting of innovative pro-poor financing mechanisms for forest conservation such as carbon finance program and private business enhancement for eco-tourism; liaise with international and national research centres; contribute actively implement the visibility strategy of the office/project; support project management in report preparation and writing.Qualifications: Degree /certificate in geography and minimum of 5 years experience in similar position; excellent knowledge in GIS systems and set up and management of related databases; experience in PRA; write and speak English and Krio; drivers licence for motorcycles.
