Four die in car crash

 

Local tabloids have reported the death of four people, including a 3-year-old boy named Ibrahim Koroma who were involved in a fatal accident along the Makeni-Kabala highway.  Reports say the accident occurred when a little boy unexpectedly appeared before the jeep which was in high speed.  In an attempt not to run into the boy, the driver reportedly took a sharp swerve that saw the vehicle somersaulting. All on board are said to have lost their lives.


Le.40Bn GST for first quarter of 2010


The Assistant Commissioner of NRA in charge of Goods and Services Tax (GST), Mr. Alfred Akibo-Betts has reportedly disclosed that his institution has successfully collected the sum of Le.40 billion as proceed of the GST for the first quarter of 2010.  He also reportedly disclosed that about 70% of business houses have now complied with the GST implementation.   


Teachers demand increase in salary


In line with the general demand by teachers countrywide, the Kenema District branch of the Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU) has reportedly called on the APC government to increase salaries to match with the harsh living condition.  According to reports, the teachers are frustrated that even with increase in rent, medical bills and feeding, their salaries remain a pittance for which they want government to do something more. In he face of all this however, teachers in that eastern district have dissociated  themselves from the intention of a splinter group called Concerned Teachers demanding withdrawal from unions membership.


Moyamba Hospital ready for free health care


Authorities at the Moyamba Government Hospital are reported to have expressed their readiness for the provision of free health care when officially launched on Independence Day by President Koroma.  In addition to the main referral hospital, Moyamba District has about 98 peripheral health units that have all expressed their readiness to start the project. 

Lunsar police under fire

Local tabloids have alleged that residents of Lunsar are gradually losing confidence in the police for their nonchalant attitude to complainants.  According to reports, the police in that township are accused of playing down cases for their lethargy in carry out speedy investigations.  Series of cases involving motor bike accidents are said to be brushed aside with victims left with no justice as police connive with suspects.       


Military in drug distribution


Reports have it that military trucks and security men are busy distributing drugs in various districts ahead of the deadline for the kick off of the free health care delivery service.  According to reports the soldiers are used in order to ensure security for the safety of the consignments.
