MACOSA, the Mass Communication Students Association of Fourah Bay College (FBC), on Wednesday, 21st April 2010 hosted one of Sierra Leones celebrated International Civil Servants, Dr. Kaifala Marah as guest speaker of a public lecture held at the New Mass Communication main lecture hall.

Dr. Marah spoke on the theme; Transformation through the power of Ideas to students, lecturers, youth group and civil society group representatives. The programme was broadcasted live on Radio Mount Aureol and linked by Radio Democracy 98.1 FM.

Dr. Marah enthused his hall-packed audience with his thoughts as to how ideas once used positively, can bring about positive change. Dr. Marah who has seen and gone through a lot of hassles in his current tender age before reaching his current envious position and status, pointed out that ideas go beyond strategic planning processes, and budgeting and economics, and ventures into territories that push the boundaries of tradition and conventions. He however noted that ideas can only be powerful if applied in a disciplined environment.

Dr. Marah underscored that Sierra Leones backwardness since independence was purely due to "poverty of the mind" and an undisciplined environment, where every citizen in one or the order finds way to circumvent rules and regulations for their selfish interests.

Dr. Marah noted, "the poverty we are experiencing today as a nation is not a curse but an outcome of the collective thinking capacity of past generations handed down to us. Poverty in the first degree lives in our minds as a legacy and our heritage-and that of the second degree lives with uswe think it and live with it. In short, we suffer from poverty of the mind and is reflected in the way we manage our livesThe truth is, as a nation we have not been very smart in our approach to development-thinking; we have not been able to employ our positive intellects to translate our God-given resources for the good of the nation. As one generation failed the other, so did the succeeding ones did to posterityand the loop goes on and on"

The MACOSA Guest speaker implored the students to gain education and to use their ideas, individually or collectively to pull Sierra Leone from its present quagmire. He implored them further thus: "The transformation of personalities and institutions is undeniably made possible through the power of ideas. Current 21st Century initiatives and inventions, etc. are the very foundations on which the giants of development stand, and ideas have remained the resource that shape our personalities and define our institutions. The 21st Century challenges require that we think new, adopt new stream of ideas and search for what it takes to be efficient, effective as well as progressive in whatever we do."

Dr. Marah is an alumnus of Fourah Bay College, and has worked for the former Koidu New Sembehun Town Council in Kono district. He is currently Adviser, Public Expenditure Management-Governance and Institutional Development Division of the Commonwealth Secretariat in London. Dr. Kaifala Marah spoke as a citizen of Sierra Leone not in his capacity as a staff of the intergovernmental organisation.
