Magistrates Plan strike Action


Local tabloids say Magistrate of the Sierra Leone Judiciary are planning to stage a strike action if their demands for favorable conditions of service are not meet. The Master and Registrar of the High Court, Elwyn Bailor reportedly disclosed that he had no knowledge about the planned strike action to be staged by the magistrates but that he is however in sympathy with their situation. Reports are that some magistrates earn only Le 300,000 (three hundred thousand Leones) as their monthly salary, which is seen as a recipe for corruption.


Handicap International Trains 40 Security Personnel


Newspaper reports state that an international Non-Governmental Organization, Handicap International has trained over 40 security personnel on disability at the National Stadium in Freetown. According to reports the objective of the training is to sensitize the forces on the ratified United Nations Convention on the Protection and Rights of the disabled. The Sierra Leone House of Parliament, reports went on has demanded the inclusion of disabled in the Sierra Leone forces.


Massive Sacking at a Leading Bank


Reports have alleged that staff of one of Sierra Leones leading financial institutions are restless and filled with fear that their employments might be terminated. Reports furthered that, as it is now, a good number of termination letters are on shelves awaiting over sixty (60) of the Banks Staff while several others have already lost their job since a merger occurred between two banks.


Civil Society Expresses Frustration over Delay of Justice


It has been reported that some Civil Society Organizations have expressed disappointment over the delay of justice against their colleagues serving the National Election Watch (NEW) who are facing a preliminary investigation in the court on a matter he was accused on. According to reports, the NEW members are alleged to have written a defamatory press release alleging that the Chief Whip for the House of Parliament in Sierra Leone Honorable Ibrahim Bundu was improperly involved in the just concluded Dibya Chieftaincy Election, contrary to the Elections Act of Sierra Leone. The NEW members have denied that their report was defamatory.


Traditional Healers Braces for April 27


Traditional Leaders resident in the Western Area and Lungi in Sierra Leone have disclosed plans to showcase their cultural know-how during the Sierra Leones 49th Independence celebration that should have now been held at the National Stadium yesterday April 27th 2010. According to reports, the association was cordially invited by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to perform at the Independence Day celebration. Reports say these traditional Leaders have in the past exhibited their powerful skills using magic and herbs to cure sick people across the country.


Government to Bring 200 more Tractors


Reports have disclosed that that the Government of Sierra Leone is planning to import 200 (two hundred) more tractors to Sierra Leone in a bid to help achieve its goals for the agricultural sector. According to reports the government is currently negotiating for these tractors to be delivered to farmers. Reports say currently 60% of the population now rely on food self- sufficiency meaning they can grow their own food to feed themselves.
