In Sierra Leone, NETHIPS Starts Solidarity Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS

The umbrella crusade organization against HIV/AIDS in this country, Network of HIV/AIDS Positive in Sierra Leone (NETHIPS) in collaboration with the Network of African People Living with HIV/AIDS (NAPWA) and other partners on Friday 30 April 2010 formally started another marvelous program call the National Solidarity Fund for Persons Living with HIV/AIDS and Vulnerable Children.

The auspicious ceremony which happened at the NETHIPS Victoria Street in Freetown, attracted hundreds of people who have concern over threats the malaise is posing to global development. Notable among the entourage were the Executive Director of NAPWA, Madam Leiliane Corche; the National Coordinator of NETHIPS, Mr. Idrissa Songo; members of the press; and other important stakeholders.

In his welcome address Mr. Songo unveiled that the launching of the Solidarity Fund primarily aims at soliciting fund for the sustainability of their activities. He maintained that they have confidence in the reliability of the donor community, adding that there is every possibility that donors will not stop funding their programs. The Solidarity Fund Mr. Songo claimed is well developed in a manner that will attract donors and is of assistance to promote their activities. He disclosed that the fund will be used to come to the assistance of those persons living with HIV/AIDS, and consequently foster the education of vulnerable children of parents who have contracted the syndrome .This he assured will be ensured by using the fund to provide allowances for volunteers who for the past years have been assiduously working with NETHIPS without remuneration.

Madam Corche in her contribution said they have written a project which aim at defending the rights of persons living with HIV/AIDS and improving their welfare. She disclosed that the project which started in 2008 is presently sponsoring six countries in the West Africa that are constrained with source of resources.

She commended NETHIPS for being very instrumental in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Madam Corche also stressed the necessity for the public to cooperate with the Solidarity Fund. She revealed that NAPWA has donated Fifteen Thousand Dollars to NETHIPS from fund they received from the Open Society Initiative for West Africa and urged other well meaning people by donating into the Solidarity Fund Account No.5001255010128 at the ECObank.
