Dear Sir,

Kindly permit me space in your popular and widely read newspaper to humbly appeal to the authorities concerned to address the issue of forceful conscription into secret societies in Kono District. I am compelled to write this letter to serve as an early warning to the authorities because as I see it, there are every possibility that the acts so perpetuated in Kono, will some day spark into full blown chaos.

Secret societies are indeed important as they form part of our cultural heritage. Its important in our communities in this regard need not be over emphasized.

But forceful conscription into any secret society is not only dangerous for a country emerging from a brutal war, but a gross violation of the right of people.

Therefore, compulsory enrollment of people into any secret society is a recipe for disaster. Equally, anyone using secret society to muzzle political opponents is a complete political miscalculation, for it will not only provock violence, but will also devalue and erode the respectability of the said secret society involved. Like for Kono in particular, it is my humble submission that at this point in time, when the state of the district is in dire need of reconsideration, considering its marginalized state in terms of socio-economic development in post war Sierra Leone, the local authorities should think it wise to say NO to anything that has the potential of sparking further trouble.

Sponsors of such a diabolical act should note that secret society matters are very sensitive issues in our district that are likely, to create social friction. Not every body in Kono are entitled to join a secret society. The culture and tradition of some of these people, frowns at secret societies. Therefore should not be forced into it.

A perfect co-existence and mutual understanding amongst secret society members and non members will greatly help us develop our battered district. Please stop the forceful conscription into secret society now!

He who has ears, let him hear.

Humbly yours,

Saa Mathias Bendu.
