Third Rounds Polio Immunization Ends

The third rounds of the national immunization exercise for the eradication of polio in Sierra Leone has ended in Freetown, reports say.  The process, reports furthered, was conducted by the Ministry of Health and Sanitation in collaboration with UNICEF and other donors.  The immunization targeted children five years and below, reports stated.  The childhood disease is said to have recently resurfaced in the country, after a few years of its eradication.

140 Students Caught with Forged Results

Reports have it that about 140 students of the Njala University College who gained admission into the college for various courses with forged WASSCE results have been discovered by the administration.  According to reports, the malpractices were discovered mainly in the education department offering courses for the award of teaching certificates and Bachelors in Education.  This has however been blamed on the college administration for recruiting students without proper verification of results submitted.  This ugly development is reported to also be unfolding in other tertiary institutions, including Fourah Bay College.

Soldiers Arrested for Demanding Salary Increase

Six military Doctors attached to the 34 Military Hospital were reportedly detained for officially writing and signing a letter demanding an increment in their salaries to meet the standards of the other Doctors attached to government hospitals.  According to reports, the doctors opted to quit the force at the end of the month if their demands were not met.  Doctors of the 34 Hospital, though a government entity, are yet to benefit from the new package offered to other medical practitioners in government hospitals for the free health care delivery service, even as they continue to offer same services to those vulnerable groups.

Le.50M to Contest for SLPP Leadership

Reports have alleged that those intending to contest for the position of Flag Bearer for opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) are requested to pay a non-refundable fee of Le.50, 000, 000.  Reports say most candidates have criticized the amount suggesting that it is too much since a total of 27 candidates have so far expressed interest in the said position.  The SLPP Secretary General, Jacob Jusu Saffa has reportedly stated that the said amount is one of the eligibility criteria in the partys revised constitution.

450 Bike Riders Storm FCC

Local tabloid reports say at least 450 commercial bike riders recently stormed the Freetown City Council demanding the Mayors intervention in what they described as wanton pressure from personnel of the Sierra Leone Police.  According to reports, most of their motor bikes have been arrested and kept under police custody even though they have their bikes properly licensed by the Sierra Leone Road Transport Authority. The riders are still doubtful as to why their bikes were confiscated by the police, report says.

32 Remanded for Loitering

32 people have been arrested and sent on remand at the maximum prisons at Pademba Road in Freetown for loitering.  Reports say the arrests were effected at the Grey Bush area in the east end of Freetown.  According to reports, the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Daniel Bongroh has informed newsmen that the accused were arrested during odd hours of the night
