The mayor of the Freetown Municipality, Winstanley Bankole Johnson, some three days ago led a high powered delegation to the Portee and Palm Bridge markets in the eastern part of Freetown.

Explaining the purpose of the visit to the people  at the two markets, the Public Relation Officer of the Freetown City Council (FCC) Mr. Cyril Maltia, stated that the visit was to enable them acquaint themselves on a first hand basis about the marketing circumstances prevalent in the markets.
Speaking to Awareness Times on the said visit, Mr. Mattia explained that during the course of the visit, it was discovered that the two markets had no permanent structures for the traders to comfortably do their business.

On what the Mayor told the traders, Mr. Mattia explained that based on the findings, the Mayor acknowledged the constraints faced by the traders, and assured them of councils determination to address their concerns. He said the Mayor encouraged them to exercise patience, and see what the council can do for them.

The Mayor also assured them, according to Mr. Mattia, that council is currently work hands in glove with other major stakeholders including the government through the ministry of Trade and Industry to provide them with the required structures.

According to him, the delegation which included the Chairman of the Municipality Trade Committee in the FCC, Councilor C.A. Kargbo, also seized the opportunity to inspect the Approved School grounds which has been eye marked as the site for the possible construction of a market centre.

Mr. Mattia also intimated that the traders were encouraged to inculcate the habit of paying their market dues, so as to enable the council become economically viable to implement the projects already proposed.
At the Palm Bridge market situated in the Wellington area, Mr. Cyril Maltia stated that the Mayor and the rest of the delegation were warmly received by the traders who are doing business there.

The Mayor, according to Mr. Mattia, assured the traders there that efforts are underway to rebuild the dilapidated Palm Bridge linking the market and the community.
