London Mining Company past Sunday donated a trophy and football kits worth millions of Leones to youths of Maton Village in the Port Loko District.

Addressing the recipients, the Managing Director of the company, David Keili noted that the donation was a way of motivating the youths as part of their cooperate social responsibility. "Our company wants to see Sierra Leone develop like other countries in the empowerment of youths," he told the youths. He lamented on the fact that with the closure of DELCO some 35 years ago, the chiefdom had continued to lag behind.

The Managing Director also used the opportunity to advise parents to encourage their children to go to school so as to change the status of their community.

He admonished the youths to remain patient for employment facilities within the company. "We will not employ every body at the same time but we ask that you exercise patience as every body one day will benefit from the company", he assured, insisting that the two chiefdoms will be the first to be considered before looking elsewhere for labour and other positions in the company as soon as exploration work starts. "This will be apart from the two million dollars given to the communities every two years", he disclosed to the gathering.

The Port Loko District Youths and Sports Committee Chairman, Mr. Mohamed Mensah thanked the management for thinking of the youths, noting that the donation was a demonstration of the companys desire to promote the welfare of the people of Marampa and Maforki chiefdoms. He went on to appeal to the manager to help fund their proposed project for a standard football field.

Regent Chief of Maforki Chiefdom, Pa Alimamy Thonkara lauded the good works of the company, stating "as from today London Mining Company is my mother and father on this earth."  He made mention of the series of developmental projects undertaken by the company.  "It is London Mining that has given us safe drinking water, fine school structures, bridges, good roads and jetty, not forgetting the numerous scholarships to our children."
