Wounded Soldiers Warn Defence Minister


A team of war wounded ex-soldiers of Sierra Leone Armed Forces have over the weekend reportedly warned the Minister of Defence, Paolo Conteh not to downplay the issue of their pensions and other benefits due them. This reportedly came as a result of the ministers lethargic attitude in addressing their issues.  The anger sparked off when they learnt that the Minister who was supposed to appear before Parliament past Thursday to answer to questions on pressing issues affecting the ex-military men but refused to honour the invitation for no substantial reason.


18 Arrested at old FBC Building


Local tabloid reports say that the Operational division of the B Division, Ross Road in Freetown led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Hillary Kanu on Saturday 22nd May 2010 arrested eighteen people at the old dilapidated Fourah Bay College Building in Cline Town.  Crimes for which they were arrested include unlawful possession of marijuana, gambling and loitering.  Reports say some suspects have already been sent to prison.


Sierra Leone Ports Authority go without a Board


Since the change of guard at the Sierra Leone Port Authority with the advent of the APC, the parastatal is reported to be run without a constituted Board of Directors to monitor its operations.  This has greatly hindered progress on accountability as each section has adopted its own way of doing things since there is no monitoring from the overseers.The delay in appointing board members has reportedly become a concern.  The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Appointments and Public Service, Sheku Bashiru B. Dumbuya is also reported to have informed the House of Parliament of the situation at the Port. 

 

Chiefdom Police Officers Receive Training


Chiefdom Police Officers who have been neglected for so long are reportedly receiving training from the Justice Sector Development Programmed (JSDP) in collaboration with other development stakeholders. The training exercise which is said to have started since Monday May 24th    is expected to end on 4th June 2010, covering the various local administrative courts countrywide.  88 Chiefdom police Officers are reportedly targeted.

 

Mayors Wife fast-tracks Cleanings exercise


Wife of the Mayor of the Freetown Municipality, Mrs. Victoria George Williams has joined the call by her husband in the cleaning of Freetown, reports say.  Her cleaning exercise which started at Ward 346 in Calaba Town Eastend Freetown is reported  to cover the whole City in time to come. However Mrs. Victoria George- Williams has complained of the lack of enough tools, manpower and fund was impeding progress in the exercise.

 

FSSG Board to compensate govt before privatization


Local media reports state that government has requested for compensation from the Board of Trustees of the Freetown Secondary School for Girls (FSSG) before going private next academic year.  The compensation is said to serve as payment to government for taking care of FSSG for the past decades.  Another unwarranted demand by government is the provision of a suitable land and time to build a new School to relocate existing students who can not afford to pay high private school fees.  Teachers, Pupils and Parents are not reportedly pleased with governments stance.

 

Freetown City Council burgled


Thieves are reported to have on Sunday 23rd May this year broken into Freetown City Council and carted away computer and other valuable assets.  Although the matter is under Police investigation, the public remains apprehensive as to the cause of rampant theft of computers and accessories from notable government institutions like the ACC, NRA and Tony Blairs office.

 

Head of British Army visits Ex-President Kabbah


The Chief of Defence Staff of the British Army, Sir David Richards last Sunday paid a courtesy call on former President Alhaji Dr. Ahmed Tejan Kabba at his residence in Freetown.  The Officer is reported to have expressed happiness with the former President, while exchanging frank views about the need to maintain permanent peace in Sierra Leone.  According to reports President Kabba used the occasion to appeal to General Richards to work towards consolidating peace in the country as well as the entire Africa sub region.
