SLPP rebukes tribal voting


Senior delegates of the SLPP from the south-east of Sierra Leone have reportedly registered their distaste for electorates voting on  tribal lines. According to them in the process of selecting the partys  Flagbearer for the coming 2012 presidential and parliamentary elections priorities would be placed on the aspirants  competence, ability, and charisma to woo support especially in the western area. Almost all the delegates in the two provinces say they will vote in the right person regardless of tribal sentiment.

 

Animal Welfare Society gets mobile clinic


The Sierra Leone Animals Welfare Society has reportedly initiated a mobile clinic programme on Thursday 20th May 2010 at the Freetown City Council.  The clinic which was launched by Mayor Herbert George-Williams is said to gear towards sensitizing residents of Freetown on the basic rights of animals.  Reports say the organization will also be closely monitoring the infliction of cruelties on animals.

 

IMC fines FCC Le 1,000,000 for legal compensation


The Freetown City Council is reported to have been fined by the Independent Media Commission the sum of Le.1, 000,000 as legal cost incurred by the latter in a matter between the two institutions.  According to reports the FCC quite recently sued IMC for not granting them license to operate a radio station in the country.  The matter was however, on Friday 21st May 2010 thrown out of High Court on grounds of improper filling of motion by the FCC.

 

Former RUF soldier apologizes for killing mother-in-law


A former Revolutionary United Front combatant, Momodu K is reported to have asked family members of the late Madam Dankay Kamara to forgive him.  He is said to have made this statement during a Fambul Tok session at Mamuduya village in the Koinadugu District last week.  Reports say Momodu confessed that he was forced by his commander during war period to kill his mother-in-law at Musaia village in the same district.

 

1st June deadline  for local tax payment


It has been reportedly disclosed that the deadline for payment of local tax is June 1st this year.  According to reports, the Deputy Mayor, Councilor Gibril Kanu on Thursday 27th May informed that after several sensitizations and extension of time for payments, the FCC has finally decided to implement actions.  Reports say anybody found wanting from 1st June will be embarrassed.  


5 Pro-Credit Bank employees sent to prison


Five employees of the Pro-Credit Bank, Starlyn Kemon, Yira Moseray Thoronka , Morlai Kamara ,Sheku Sheriff, Chernor Abdul Jalloh, and Michael Muctaru were on Thursday   May 27, 2010 refused bail in the Freetown  magistrate court No. 3 by Magistrate Bankole Shyllon.  The accused persons were reportedly charged for house breaking and larceny contrary to Section 26 (1) of the Larceny Act of 1961. According to reports the prosecution alleged that the accused on April 13th  2010  of Lumley beach road Aberdeen broke into 8E Lumley Beach Road purportedly the residence of a business woman, Theresa Turay and stole assorted household properties  valued  millions of  Leones.

 

City Council police in receipt book theft


A Metropolitan police officer of the Freetown City Council (FCC), Aruna Bangura of 105 Mayekineh Road, Calaba Town in the Eastend of Freetown was refused bail by Magistrate Steven Conteh of Freetown Court No. 1.  According to court reports, the accused faces nine count charges of larceny of state documents contrary to    Section 7 of Larceny Act of 1916, and forgery of document contrary to Section 4 (1) of the Forgery Act of 1913.  Reports say the accused on the 8th April 2010 stole FCC receipt book with registration No. 09036001.

 

UN Secretary General to visit Sierra Leone soon


A senior United Nations diplomat in New York has reportedly informed local tabloids that the Secretary General of the UN, Ban Ki Moon is expected to pay a two-day official visit to Sierra Leone starting on June 14th 2010.  during that visit, Ambassador Ban Ki Moon  will reportedly hold consultative meetings with the countrys political actors and other key state functionaries
