In Sierra Leone, Standard Chartered supports Mami En Pikin Well Bodi Week

To support the governments launch of the national Mami En Pikin Wellbodi Week, Standard Chartered Bank staff on Saturday 29th May 2009 joined its blindness prevention partner Helen Keller International and government health workers of the SLIM Clinic in the nationwide campaign, to distribute Vitamin A, Polio & Mebendazole at the Old Wharf community in Wellington.

Touring the length and breadth of the fishing community, staff of the banks Lightfoot Boston Street Branch & Head Office distributed the retina developing drug, worm medicine and polio supplement to children from the ages of 6 months to 5 years old.

Employee Volunteering is part of Standard Chartered Banks policy, which encourages its staff to volunteer in the communities were it operates. This is a demonstration of the Banks strong commitment to its corporate social responsibility through its active community partnership programmes such as the Seeing is Believing initiative, which supports the eradication of avoidable blindness in the world.

The Bank continues to work in partnership with leading eyecare NGOs, including, Helen Keller International and Sightsavers International to fund the development of sustainable eye care services in less advantaged areas of 20 cities around the world including Sierra Leone, giving poor, marginalised populations access to cataract surgery, preventative treatment, and specialised medical interventions.

Commenting on the Mami En Pikin Well Bodi Week Vitamin A distribution exercise, Kumba Ngongou Head of Corporate Affairs, said, "We are proud that Seeing is Believing; a project that provides sustainable solutions for all eye care needs, from outreach and awareness to spectacles and surgery, continues to distinguish Standard Chartered as a force for good."

In October 2007, Standard Chartered Bank Sierra Leone donated $161,026 being proceeds raised from its World Sight Day celebration to Helen Keller International for a three year period into 2010, to help eradicate blindness in the Sierra Leone society, more so in the area of the distribution of Vitamin A supplement to pregnant women and children under 5 year, she commented. bs avoidable 90% is in the developing
