The former Minister of Fisheries & Marine Resources, Haja Afsatu Kabba is reported to have suffered a collapse from illness at her residence yesterday morning of June 3rd 2010 whilst she was preparing for the days events which had included another appearance in court to face charges of alleged abuse of office and misappropriation of Government funds that she is vehemently denying. She was rushed to hospital by her husband and sons where famous Sierra Leone physician Dr. Victor Willoughby is said to have diagnosed she was running a high temperature and other febrile related mal-conditions.

According to her second son, Abdul Wahid Kabba, who confirmed the news to this newspaper, his mum had been long since warned by Dr. Victor Willoughby to rest "for two weeks" around the time the trial first properly commenced but his mum had defied doctors orders and continued to force herself to appear in court because, according to her son, she had said "her absence from court might be misconstrued by her detractors as a sign of fear of the proceedings when she had nothing to be afraid of from the witnesses statements or the charges levied against her that she has strongly pleaded innocence of".

However although she had continued to push herself to attend the court sittings, many journalists had noticed and commented that when she was in the dock during the last few hearings, whilst the entire spectators would be roaring in laughter at some of the answers being given by prosecution witnesses, Haja Afsatu Kabba had sat solemnly throughout even as her defence lawyers derided the responses of some of the witnesses.

"I suspected she might have been unwell because she never even smiled and she did look ill at the last sitting," a court clerk remarked yesterday.

Haja Afsatu Kabba who has vehemently denied the accusations and strongly pleaded not guilty to all the counts, has now appeared a total of ten times in court during which a total of four witnesses have testified so far against her. The court sessions have always been jam-packed with her supporters and yesterdays session was no exception even though she was absent. Many of her supporters openly expressed sympathy with the indicted womans illness whilst a middle-aged lady who said she was a chairlady for one of the ruling partys branch in the Northern Province, burst into tears when she heard the news that Haja Afsatu Kabba had fallen ill.

"Her enemies are just molesting this woman. It is a political conspiracy to bring her down but God will see her through this ordeal," one Haja Yealie told journalists shortly after the Courts Clerk announced that the matter has been adjourned until next week due to the ill health of the accused.
