Fisher folks at Tokeh, in the Western Area Rural District were last Thursday proud beneficiaries of a large consignment of Assorted Fishing gears donated through the collaborative effort of Government and the Management of Sierra Fishing Company Limited.

The donation which was estimated at over Twenty- Five million Leones was in response to Governments clarion call on private enterprises to fulfill their corporate social responsibility

Presenting the items on behalf of Government and the company at the Torkeh Community Centre, the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Joseph Koroma said the gesture was a clear manifestation of President Koromas desire to promote the activities of fishers in the country through the collaborative efforts of Government and the private sector.

Hon. Joe Koroma admonished the beneficiaries to organise themselves into formidable groups and work towards attaining self reliance.

He commended them for voluntarily surrendering their illegal fishing gears and promised to replace them with high quality and affordable ones.

The Fisheries and Marine Minister thanked the Managing Director of Sierra Fishing Company, Bassem Mohamed for what he referred to as a laudable gesture.

In his statement, the Managing Director of Sierra Fisheries Company pledged their continued commitment to complementing the efforts of Government in promoting socio-economic development in the country.

He appreciated Governments initiative in bringing sanity into the fisheries sector through the enforcement of rules governing it.

The Managing Director also promised to the community with a brand new out board machine and hoped they will make the best use of the opportunity.

The Village Headman, Alhaji James Slowe, recalled a promised made by President Koroma to support them during his unofficial visit to the community few months ago and thanked him for identifying himself with their problems.

Alhaji Slowe showered praises on Mr. Bassem Mohamed for the humanitarian gesture, saying they were very happy that the donation was coming true a true son of the soil.

He pointed out that fishing is their main source of livelihood and on behalf of his community promised to use the items judiciously.

The Member of Parliament of the area, Dauda Dumbuya who also donated few building materials to the community, pledged more support, love and loyalty to them.
