The Government of President Ernest Bai Koroma through the Sierra Leone Water Company (SALWACO) under the new Acting Corporate Manager, Francis D.D. Ganda is 100% financing the empowerment of thousands of inhabitants of 35 formerly neglected communities within the Koya Chiefdom to get safe drinking water. The Awareness Times confirmed this after a conducted tour organized by the SALWACO on Wednesday 9th June 2010 along the Freetown- Masiaka Highway.

Addressing the beneficiaries at various communities, the SALWACO Chairman Board of Directors, Mrs. Shirley Victoria Rogers-Wright informed that the project is "solely funded by the government of President Koroma". According to her the Le350 Million governments funding comes from taxes that have been collected since President Ernest Bai Koroma assumed office in 2007.

The beneficiaries, Mrs. Rogers-Wright revealed, were selected because they have been neglected by development partners despite their persistent cry for safe drinking water. This plight, Mrs. Rogers-Wright said attracted President Ernest Bai Koroma who facilitated funding SALWACO to implement a project that will totally solve the perennial problem because according to her, President Koroma is of the firm conviction that "the supply of hygienic water is the supply of life". She admonished them to utilize the opportunity properly and judiciously so that other suffering provincial communities can also be opportune to the Safe Drinking Project.

The Project Engineer, Mr. Joel Kamara said the construction work which is slated to be completed in the next few months has been contracted to reliable companies that were selected after a competitive bidding process. To fast track the project he called on the various communities to continue complimenting the contractors with labour. With this understanding, Mr. Kamara declared, apart from speedy completion, there will be proper supervision and accountability.

Addressing the inhabitants of Rolah and Crossing communities along the Freetown-Masiaka Highway, the Acting Executive Director of SALWACO, Mr. Francis D.D. Ganda assured that the project will be implemented in an effective and efficient manner. He underscored the importance of providing dire in need communities with pure and safe drinking water by stating that in scarcity of water, children and women suffer the most.

One of the areas traditional chiefs, Chief Saidu Dumbuya commended government for thinking of providing them with reliable hygienic water supply. He claimed this had been a crucial problem for his subjects and assured that they will make good use of the opportunity.

In his own contribution, Pa Abdul Tarawalie, an inhabitant of Crossing community said with hygienic water they are now assured of healthier lives, adding that SALWACOs intervention demonstrates the significance of citizens honoring government imposed taxes. He said when taxes are used by government for the common good of the people they will be encouraged to cooperate with government at all times.
