The former Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mr. Joe Kallon on Wednesday 30th June revealed that the former Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) led government was spending Le10 billion yearly on the Bumbuna Hydro Project since 2001, in addition to what ADB was giving to the government. He made this revelation in an exclusive interview with Awareness Times at the SLPP Party Headquarters after the monthly press briefing.
Mr. Kallon noted that they inherited old and dysfunctional machines from the former APC government which they fought hard to maintenance in order to restore electricity to the capital of Freetown. "Spare parts to restore those scraps were difficult to get as we had to search for them elsewhere but we tightened our belt just to satisfy our people", he informed.
He referred to the governing APC as dishonest for insisting that they met Freetown as a dark city. "We did all the job to ensure the speedy completion of the Hydro Project, and tell you the truth, we met Bumbuna at point zero in 2001," he proffered, adding that the SLPP government left the Project 75% complete, with 15% remaining for the APC before relinquishing power in 2007. He said as an interim measure he negotiated for the Black Hall Road plants to be providing electricity to the city while Bumbuna was in progress.
He said if as claimed that the APC government has really completed Bumbuna there should be no reasons for the plant to be shut down due to shortage of rains or dry season. "The dam should be able to supply 18 Mega watts of power to the city. I am surprised to learn that Bumbuna facility is being shut down due to water shortage," he concluded.
