Zain Boosts University of Sierra Leone

Sierra Leones leading telecommunication provider-Zain on Friday 2nd July 2010 made another remarkable history with the award of a scholarship, trophy, grants and cash to students of the University of Sierra Leone for their participation in the Zain Africa Challenge (ZAC) International Quiz competition for 2010 held in Kampala Uganda.

The auspicious awards ceremony took place at the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM) USL Library, Tower Hill Campus in central Freetown.

Addressing the audience the Vice Chancellor and principal of the University of Sierra Leone Prof. Redwood Sawyer commended Zain for promoting university education in Africa. He said taking representatives from many universities across Africa with every expense paid by Zain to participate in the ZAC competition was a laudable venture that deserved tremendous accolade. "This kind of initiative encourages student to take their courses seriously in addition to improving their standard," he noted. He disclosed that even though our students participation in such an international competition was a mere adventure, their performance was nonetheless very pleasing.

On behalf of Zain, the head of Corporate Affairs and Communication Mr. Kelvin Kellie said Zain believes in providing the best and unique opportunity for all in local communication in Africa. He disclosed that the Zain Africa Challenge (ZAC) was the first ever internationally televised academic competition for University students in Africa. "Zain Africa Challenge (ZAC) is all about creating friendship among Universities in Anglophone countries where Zain operates, as well as improving on standards," he informed, adding that this year dubbed as season four, 100 universities participated for the scholarship trophy with Zain spending over $1m in grants, prizes and other expenses to ensure its success.

Mr. Kellie further disclosed that ZAC has grown more interactive for players, university administrators, alumni and the viewing public with a presence in both face book and twitter. "The international championship festival was competed by 32 Universities in Kampala after a qualifying tournament that was held in each participating country," he informed. He said during the competition 16 programmes were broadcast through Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Zambia and the host country Uganda, including on satellite channels-Africa Magic and Magic World. He said home viewers also participated with some awarded in Sierra Leone for example. "Zain subscribers who participated in the ZAC home viewers game won 48 Nokia N97," Mr. Kellie further disclosed, adding that 12 participants, 6 each from constituent colleges of the University of Sierra Leone and the Njala University took part in the ZAC intentional championship festival with all travel and accommodation expenses incurred by Zain from Sierra Leone to Uganda.

In all Zain parted in awarded a trophy, ten thousand dollars worth of educational items comprising of three laptop computers, three projectors, 20 USB memory sticks and two Zain Internet Modems with one years subscription.

The six participating students were Songor S.J Koedoyoma and Samuel Williams both of COIMAHS, Abubakarr Sawanneh of IPAM, Jimmy Smith of FBC with each receiving $1000 dollars each. The students coach, Mr. Ambrose Rogers also received one thousand dollars.

Awareness Times also spoke to the team coach Mr. Rogers who disclosed that the competition was very tasking but they were however, able to achieve what they wanted. "I had a sleepless night in the same room with my students and we were able to make to the highest level," he said. He said his students outstanding performance earned one of them, Songor Koedoyoma an award as both the best international participant and most improved student.
