Teacher Beats Student to Coma

Makeni Comprehensive Academy (MCA) Secondary School teacher whose name was given as Momodu Koroma allegedly beat one Ibrahim S. Conteh of SSS I to coma last week for examination malpractice.  The incident is reported to have ignited some riotous conduct by other students who saw the act by the teacher as cruel and a violation of human rights. Personnel of the Sierra Leone Police, assisted by some military officers reportedly came in timely to avert what would have resulted to an ugly scenario. The victim has been admitted to the hospital and is reported to be responding to treatment as police continue their investigation.

Bombs Discovered in Port Loko

Four bombs have been reportedly discovered in a Forest near Kamator Village, Maforki Chiefdom in the Port Loko District by the Health and Emergency Services Manager of African Minerals, a mining consortium operating in the northern part of the country. Police investigations conclude that the bombs are some of the several unexploded bombs abandoned by warring factions during the eleven years long rebel war in the country. It is reportedly feared that many more bombs are hidden in isolated places in various parts of the country yet to be discovered.

Heavy storm causes power outages.

Following the storm that characterized the heavy downpour of rain in the city of Freetown past Wednesday, parts of the capital of Freetown remain in total blackout as National Power Authority transmission lines got destroyed. Areas hard hit include Goderich Village in the west. However efforts are being made by the Authority to restore electricity to the affected areas with vigorous repairs underway.

Parliamentary Committee Meets Petroleum Resources Unit

The Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Defence and Presidential Affairs on Thursday visited the Petroleum Resources Unit as part of their monitoring activities. As reported, the visit of the MPs was to have an understanding of the operations of the Unit as well as identifying problems for that may be affecting that entity. The visit was reportedly highly appreciated by the PRU staff as it gave them the opportunity to discuss many pertinent issues.

Foreign Investors Condemn poor state of Freetown Airport

Reports have alleged that certain foreign investors who recently visited Sierra Leone on prospective investment ventures were unhappy with the state of the countrys only international airport at Lungi outside Freetown. They are reported to have expressed their disappointment over the low standard and poor delivery services of the airport.  The concerned investors could not do otherwise but to appeal to government to modernize the airport if only the country is to attract foreign investors.

Teachers Attacks Union Office

Dissatisfied members of the Sierra Leone Teachers Union known as Concerned Teachers early this week reportedly stormed Union Head Office at Kissy in eastern Freetown in demand for the resignation of the entire executive membership. The rampaging teachers allegation was that after exploiting all civilized avenues to force the executive out of office because of many administrative and financial infractions, they had no option but to make physical attack on the executives. The situation was arrested before it could degenerate into chaos.

Mines Monitoring Officers go without pay

Local tabloids have alleged that there is a discontent among four hundred and seventy nine Mines Monitoring Officers (MMDS) attached to the Ministry of Mineral Resources over the delay of Salaries.  According to reports since April this year the MMOS have not received their salaries.  This according to reports may not be unconnected to the drop in revenue generation by the ministry from which salaries are paid. This will reportedly affect other mining activities with the recent discovery of tons of Iron Ores in the Northern part of Sierra Leone.
