Presidential Affairs Ministry Abolished

Reports have it that Ministry of Presidential and Public Affairs has been abolished and replaced with that of Chief of Staff. The incumbent will now ensure the execution of President Koromas Agenda for Change by providing a link and support for Ministries Departments and Agencies and to meet their various targets. The Presidents appointee for that new position is Dr. Kaifala Marah who is said to be engaged with the Common Wealth.

Bo District Elects New Female Chief

Local tabloids say a 50-year old Mama Yeanoh Kpaka was last week elected as the first female Town Chief of Mandu in the Valunia Chiefdom, Bo District. The chief is reported to have informed the press that she was elected by her people due to the developmental initiatives she had had been involved in within the community that had earned the chiefdom many projects. Chief Kakpa is reported to have defeated her rival, Mr. Mkayawo by 82 as against 2 votes cast. If no contention against her, then it is expected the chiefs crowing ceremony will soon be done by the Ministry of Local Government.

NEC Boss Takes Presidential Oath of Office

The President of the Republic of Sierra Leone on past Monday administered Oath of Office to the re-appointed Chairperson of the National Electoral Commission, Dr. Christiana Thorpe at State House in Freetown. After administering the oath, President Koroma thanked Dr. Thorpe for her good job. It could be recalled that, when Dr. Thorpe stood before Parliament for her reappointment, she was highly criticized by opposition SLPP who rejected her on grounds that there was a pending matter against her in court for the nullification of 477 poling stations in the 2007 presidential run-off. But even as the opposition walked off, ruling APC in majority endorsed her reappointment.

President Appoints New Ambassador to Russia

Reports say President Koroma has appointed Mr. Sahr Yambasu, a strong ruling APC party member and Chairman of the Kono District Council as the Sierra Leones Ambassador to Russia.  Reports however have it that following the undiplomatic behaviour of the former ambassador, the Government of Russia is yet to accept the new ambassador as he needs to go through background check on his character. This is a new policy put in place by the Russia Foreign Ministry to investigate appointed Ambassadors to their country.  As this is a high profile position most often meant for northerners, President Koromas latest move in appointing someone from Kono is allegedly to keep the Kono people appeased, after allegations of lack of care for them by the APC government.

The Freetown City Council and office of the National Security have been urged by the Metrological authority to prepare for disaster management.
