Youths Engage in Tree Planting


Ahead of the commemoration of the 5th of Julys World Tree Planting Day, the Forestry Division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has reportedly engaged youths on a massive tree planting exercise along GUMA Valley water catchments within the Peninsula Forest in the Western Area.  The exercise is in line with Forestrys determination to mitigate the looming disaster caused by deforestation, especially within catchments areas.

 

Gruesome Road Accident Kills Two


Local tabloids have intimated the loss of life of two people in two separate gruesome road accidents along the Freetown-Port Loko highway early this week.  According to reports, one of the accidents involving a Mazda car with Registration No AEW 292 en route to Port Loko from Freetown lost control when the driver allegedly drove the vehicle into a pothole at high speed close to Rogbere Junction, causing it to run into one Yaebu Kamara roadside killing her instantly.  The other accident involved the collision of two Toyota Land Cruiser jeeps that reportedly resulted to the death of one Fudia Pearce Mansaray on board one of the vehicles.


NATCOM Donates to King Georges Home


The National Telecommunication Commission has reportedly donated a consignment of food and non-food items worth Le 20 million to inmates of King Georges Home for the aged in the east end of Freetown past Tuesday. According to reports, the items included bags of rice, gallons of cooking oil, bags of onions, cartons of tomato paste and toiletries. Reports say, this gesture aims at showing the commitment of NATCOM towards its Cooperate Social Responsibilities.


Salone Writer Clinches $10,000 Caine Prize


Local media reports have asserted that a Sierra Leonean writer, Olufumi Terry has emerged as winner of the 2010 Caine Prize for African Writing, regarded as Africa leading literary award.  The prize was reportedly awarded for his exemplary work, Stick Fighting Days, a presentation of a heroic culture.  The entry that earned him the 10,000 prize has been reportedly classified as an enormous talent for the future.    


PC to Account for 2008 Tax proceeds

 

Locals of Konike Chiefdom in the Tonkolili District, north of Sierra Leone are alleged to have made representation to the Local Government Ministry through their Member of Parliament and Councilors to investigate their Paramount Chief, Hon. Bai Kurr Kanagbaro Sankoh for his failure to account for local tax proceeds since 2008.  According to reports, the residents are demanding that a committee be set to investigate the PC since they have seen nothing done with the tax monies in terms of development. The Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Hon. Raymond Kabia had reportedly accepted the peoples request to investigate the PC.


158 Army Recruits  to Pass Out


It has been reportedly informed that a total of 158 recruits of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) will be passing out tomorrow Friday 9th July, 2010 at the Benguema Military Training Center in the Western Rural District. According to reports, one Captain Ken Jabbie will be commissioning two specialist Cadet Officers at the ceremony.
