In Sierra Leone, For Zain Africa Challenge, Njala University Receives Dollars Windfall

In promoting education in its community, Zain the leading mobile telecommunications company in Sierra Leone, on Tuesday 13th July 2010 donated cash, educations items and a trophy to the Njala University College (NUC) at the college campus in Freetown.


The donation was made as a result of the colleges participation in the Zain Africa Challenge Session 4 at Uganda, Kampala. It was revealed that not only did the NUC reach the second rounds but they went on to win the Ultimate Challenge Us Doubles as the ultimate choice which earned another US$500 for each student participant.


Speaking at the ceremony the Dean of School of Technology at Njala University, Professor Andrew Baimba expressed his thanks and appreciation to Zain on behalf of the college. He described the ZAC competition as a tool to enhance the improvement of the countrys educational standards. He advised the coaches and other students to get prepared so as to participate even more solidly in the next international festival of the Zain Africa Challenge.

 

The Vice Chancellor and Principal of the Njala University, Professor Abu Sesay described the occasion as a special event geared towards excellence despite many challenges. He commended Zain for such a wonderful partnership that now existed between NUC and Zain. He said from his observations, Zain does not believe in speaking lots but does things that are very reliable and wonderful. He said Zain has given the university an inspiration through the ZAC that has made the college to be even more recognisable on the international fora. He called for the relationship to last forever.


The Public Relations Executive of Zain, Madam June-Rose Johnson proceeded to assure of the continuity of the current strong relationship that Zain has with Njala as that was simply an opportunity that Zain saw through which educational institutions can benefit from the companys corporate social responsibilities.


In his statement, the Head of Corporate Affairs and Communications, Kelvin Kellie, disclosed that the participation of NUC in the ZAC competition which is the first ever televised academic quiz among students in Africas Anglophone universities in worth rewarding. He informed that ZAC is a powerful testimony of Zain commitment to the advancement of youths talents through their support for education as well as their social and community initiatives. He also said Zain always believes in sharing its profit with its local communities through the exemplifying attributes of the human spirit of community building.


He said Zain makes it a policy to give support and provide capacity to strengthen communities whatever it invests. He disclosed that everybody was catered for in the ZAC competition including home viewing subscribers who won a total of 48 expensive nokia phones.


All the student participants including George Otis Campbell and Alhassan Kanneh received one thousand, five hundred United States dollars each and their coach Mr. S.M.B Senesie and their liaison, Christina Clarkson received one thousand United States dollars each.

 

Zain Management presented on academic trophy, 2 laptop computers, 2 desktop computers, 20 flash drives, 2 Internet modems with one year subscription preloaded and a large number of cartons of A4 papers. In total, all the grants and cash prizes were worth a whopping 18 thousand United States dollars.


Student participants and coach also expressed appreciation and thanks to Zain.
