The people of Makeni City, in the Northern part of Sierra Leone are presently in a happy mood, as they will soon see their clock tower in a very beautiful shape. In the past, the situation of the clock tower has been an embarrassment to many indigenes who could not understand why cities like Bo and Kenema can boast of very beautiful clock towers while Central Makeni, the birthplace of the President is only decorated by a patch work of concrete regarded as the foundation of an unfinished clock tower.

This situation is however set to take the back seat as Sierra Leoneís biggest mobile network; Africell is undertaking the construction of an ultra modern clock tower whose splendor could only be contested by Old Ben in London.

Makeni City was over joyful over the weekend as Africell formally handed over the construction site to MoNCOM, the engineering company that also carried out the beautification of our new sparkling and overtly majestic Freetown Cotton Tree.

Africellís Chief Executive Officer, Robert Khoury said his company felt honoured to be partnering with government in carrying out such the project, adding that the clock tower, when completed would be one that depicts the history, tradition and culture of our people and had high hopes for the tourism potential of Makeni and to this end, he was certain that Makeni will become a major centre of attraction once the clock tower is completed.

ďThe first class road from Freetown to Makeni and other infrastructural developments and improvements, not to mention effective mobile communication, have positioned Makeni as a candidate for the receipt of corporate gifts by Africell,Ē he maintained amidst thunderous applauses from a vividly appreciative audience.

Robert Khoury said the proposed Makeni Clock Tower will carry an over-head bridge across two roads; Rogbaneh Road and Station Road and that a fountain (probably like the one at the Cotton Tree) would be constructed with a state-of-the-art lighting system.

ďThe design and architectural work of the tower was done by IDEAS Limited; an architectural firm headed by Mr. Siray Timbo. They will supervise the works to ensure quality and high standardsĒ he revealed.

Minister of Information and Communication, Alhaji I.B Kargbo was rather less restrained when he referred to Africell as an epitome of corporate social responsibility in Sierra Leone.

Alhaji I.B. Kargbo cited the many development activities of Africell and described the Makeni clock tower project as a significant milestone in re-branding the strategically located provincial headquarter.

ďAfricell promised and they have deliveredÖI am really proud of them and I hope others will follow suitĒ he said.

Local authorities including the Mayor of the Makeni City Council, Moses Sesay and Paramount Chief of Bombali Shebora Cheifdom, Kasangha II, commended Africell ďthe SaviourĒ and pledged to support the company in carrying out its operations in the entire Northern Region. The pouring of libation at the construction site by traditional leaders climaxed the occasion.
