World Bank Doles out US$ 20m for Youth Empowerment


Local tabloids have disclosed that the World Bank on Tuesday reached an agreement with the Government of Sierra Leone to support governments short and medium term efforts to build on the existing youth employment programs. According to reports, the grant will be used to finance series of youth empowerment projects such as cash for work, skills development and employment support as well as institutional supports policy development.

 

Chinese Hospital to be Completed Next year


The manager in charge of the construction of the Chinese Teaching Hospital at Kossoh Town, XU Liang Quan on Tuesday reportedly revealed that construction work on the project would be completed in January next year. Speaking through an interpreter, Mr. Quan reportedly told the Deputy Minister of Health, Mohamed D. Koroma that most of the blocks and wards have been completed.  He was however said to have expressed certain difficulties facing them in the project implementation. Reports say the deputy minister used the occasion to advise the engineers to add staff quarters and a conference room to the structures. When completed, the teaching hospital will be biggest in the sub region.

 

UNDP Boosts Public Service Commission


Reports have it that the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) over the weekend donated one four-wheel Toyota jeep, including computers and accessories to the Public Service Commission (PSC) in the name of public sector reform programme. PSC staffs have reportedly commended UNDP for giving their institution a facelift. At the handing over ceremony UNDP staff were said to have implored PSC staff to use the items their intended purposes.


Regional Chief Imam Appointed


The united council of Imams sin Sierra Leone in collaboration with the supreme Islamic council has reportedly appointed Alhaji  Osman Foday Swaray as the new regional chief Imam for the northern province. The event which took place in Makeni was witnessed by hundreds of Islamic personalities, including the entire district chief Imams in the country who reportedly declared their support for the new Imam.


Gang Leader Cuts rivals Thumb Off


A social club called Men of Blood within the Mountain Cut Community last Sunday attacked one Swaray Kallon and cut off his thumb. According to reports Swaray went to accompany his friend to the clubs membership when he was rushed upon by a mob accusing him of not patronizing with them.  The leader of the gang, commonly referred to as Five Star General drew a cutlass and cut off Swarrays thumb. Police are said to be investigating the matter.


Councilors Complete Environmental Seminar in China


Three councilors representing the Freetown City Council have reportedly completed environmental management seminar at the Centre for Environmental Education and Communication of the ministry of environmental protection in China. The seminar was reportedly conducted in Beijing, the capital of China from June 15 to July 12, 2010. The purpose of the seminar was to improve the councilors ability in environmental management. They are expected to educate their various ward members on sanitation and environment issues.


Police Apprehend Cocaine Peddlers

 

Police attached at the Congo Cross station are currently investigating three people found in possession of a parcel of white substance suspected to be cocaine. The suspects, Mohamed Sultan Kamara of 12 Power Magazine, Kissy; Sheiku Kamara of No. 5 Cockle Bay Road and Elizabeth Kamara of Hassan Drive Lumley were on Sunday arrested and taken to police station for investigating and later taken to the anti drug unit at Murray town for verification and further investigations.
