Russians did not Reject John Yambasu


Initial Reports alleging that the nomination of John Yambasu as Sierra Leones Ambassador to Russia has been turned by the Russians have been debunked by the Government of Sierra Leone. It now appears that Mr. Yambasu has never been associated with criminal actions nor has he been ever invited for questioning over criminal actions nor was he ever linked to missing artefacts during his student days in the former USSR Soviet Union. Mr. Yambasu, on the contrary, has a fine repytation devoid of criminality.


Insurance Companies Pay Expenses Benefit


Reports have revealed that three insurance companies including FITCO insurance brokers on Thursday fulfilled their commitments by presenting a cheque of Le 10,000,000 to four civil servants who recently passed always in active service as beneficiaries. According to reports, the presentation was made in a well attended ceremony held at Ministerial Building, George Street in Freetown. Each family member reportedly received an initial sum of Le2.5m, while a balance of Le7.5 million will be given to the families within 40 days after the pronouncement of death.

 

30 Pregnant Women die in 2 months


In spite of governments Free Health Care Initiative, reports allege that about thirty (30) pregnant women have lost their lives while trying to give birth at the Princess Christian Maternity Hospital (PCMH) in Freetown between May and June this year. However, Medical Superintendent, Dr. Tholley is reported as saying that those deaths were as a result of late arrivals at the hospital for treatment and other medical attention. He blamed this on the poor education to beneficiaries on the initiative in the country.


RSLAF Opens Aviation Library


The Air Wing of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) has reportedly opened an Aviation Library at the Cockerill Military Headquarters in Freetown. The library was named after Lt. Colonel Leslie Bryant the out-going United States Air and Defence attach to the US Embassy in Sierra Leone. According to reports it was through Lt. Colonel Bryant that the RSLAF got the much needed supports and recognition from the US State Department and US Department of Defence for which they bestowed the honour in him. The library is now full of reading materials & journals on aviation, leadership, management law, economics mathematics, statistics and war novels.


Army Civil Staff Appeal for Rice Quota 


Local tabloids have alleged that civilian staff working for the RSLAF do not form part of the monthly rice quota reintroduced by the APC government.  This has reportedly caused grumbling amongst the civil staff members who see themselves as an integral part of the military. According to report previously, they used the receive a token of food supply per day and are now asking the question as to why they should be exempted from the monthly quota. This has allegedly caused them to call on the government to kindly consider them.


Makeni Wins First Brains of Salone Quiz


A Senior Secondary School Student, Jocob A.R Conteh of Makeni has emerged as the winner of the 50th Independence Anniversary Brain of Sierra Leone Quiz competition held in that northern city last week. The competition attracted participants from various Senior Secondary Schools, and was the first to be hosted out of Freetown. There were 6 participants in the competition and all of them got prizes including Jacob A.R Conteh who got a star Prize of Le. 500,000. The event was organized by the National Telecommunication Commission (NATCOM).


Government to Ban Private SIM Cards


It has been reportedly revealed that government intends banning all private restricted SIM numbers effective 1st August 2010. This was disclosed by the Minister of Information and Communication late last week. He is quoted as saying that the only personalities who will be permitted to continue using private restricted numbers are the president and other top government functionaries including himself. Reason allegedly advanced by the minister is for the sake of nation security. He is however reported to have said it is parliament that will endorse the motion that would be soon brought before them.
