In a bid to address the alarming spate of vices bemoaning Sierra Leones capital city, the Freetown City Council in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Police and Local Policing Partnership Board on Saturday 27th July 2010 launched a pilot project titled Urban Crime Prevention Programme targeting anti social behaviours by youths.

Officially launching the project at the Central Police Station Conference Hall, His Lordship, Mayor Herbert George-Williams totally condemned youth violence, the unwarranted street blockades caused by funeral processions, marriages and thanksgiving services by schools and the recent new development of circulating pornographic materials among other immoral acts.

The Mayor underscored the negativity of these anti social behaviours which he said do not befit a modern city often visited by high placed foreigners. He said the perpetration of such social vices have far reaching consequences to the reputation of Freetown which used to be  a role model for other cities world wide. Towards re-branding Sierra Leone for the impending 50th independence anniversary slated for April 27th 2011, Mayor Herbert George Williams made a clarion call on the police, religious and tribal leaders and other stakeholders to exercise concerted efforts in addressing the menaces.

In his opening statement the Police Partnership Board chairman, Chief Matthew Jibao Young outlined the socio-economic implications of anti social behaviours. He reiterated the point made by the mayor of how marriages, funeral corteges and thanksgiving processions greatly contribute to traffic congestion in the city, adding that public display of pornographic films and immoral dress codes has increased teenage pregnancy, prostitutions and indecent sexual indulgences.  He however, assured the Freetown City Council of his organizations commitment to fighting those vices.

In his contribution the AIG responsible for professional standards, Mr. S.I S Koroma stressed the need to galvanize efforts in tackling anti-social behaviours. These unaccepted behaviours; AIG S.I.S Koroma gravely destroy the citys image, as they equally influence youths in a bad way. He urged to treat the matter with urgency for the future betterment of Sierra Leone. He concluded by commending Mayor Herbert George-Williams for initiating the training of metropolitan police officers which he disclosed are complementing the SLP in addressing crime within Freetown.

Others personalities who graced the colourful ceremony included the Justice Sector Development Programme Coordinator, Mr. Bob Bradley, the incoming Local Unit Commander for Central Police, Mr. Thomas Lahai, the Western Region Commander, Chief Superintendent D.B Wellington, Mrs. Haja Balkisu Kamara and LPPB vice chairperson, Mrs. Diana T.G. Kamara.
