Disaster Hits Scavengers at Demolition Site


Local tabloids have disclosed that two boys were past Tuesday victims of falling debris from a collapsed storey building at Berry Street, central Freetown.  The young boys were reportedly scavenging for scraps at the bottom of the house when the upper floor caved in, inflicting injuries on them.  With the timely intervention of passers-by they were rushed to the hospital where they are said to be responding to treatment. 


Falcon Bridge Community in Fear of Another Landslide 


A very big boulder hanging on top of a house is creating fear amongst residents within the Falcon Bridge community in Freetown. According to reports residents are worried that with the continuous heavy down pour of rain, the suspended rock may lose its position and fall on houses underneath.  The fear is reportedly borne out of the fact that a similar incident recently occurred that left many injured and properties damaged.  However, reports say City Council authorities and community elders have assured residents of doing something to avert any further ugly occurrence. 


Fake Investors Arrested in Kenema


Police on Tuesday 27th July 2010 nabbed four people purporting to be investors in Kenema City, Eastern Sierra Leone. According to reports, the fake investors were allegedly extorting money from desperate job seekers on the pretext of providing jobs for them in Iraq.  However, reports allege that Kenema police are yet to disclose the identity of the individuals on the grounds that matter was under investigation. The Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour, Moijua Kaikai is said to have raised concern over the activity of criminals that dupe unsuspecting youths into fake employments, citing similar reports lodged to his office form Makeni and Bo in the north and south respectively.


Police Intercept 16 Packets of Mosquito nets


Police last week reportedly intercepted 16 bundles of mosquito nets on board a Toyota van driven by one Ibrahim Adikalie Suma. According to reports, the police got wind of the smuggling attempt at Sierra Leone-Guinea Border of nets supplied by the Ministry of Health as part of the Free Health Care initiative to lactating mothers and pregnant women. The suspect is reported to have confessed to the police that the items were given to him by one Mohamed Bangura for onward delivery to a relative at Kambia.   


Koinaduga Embarks on Community Farming


Koinadugu District locals have established Community Farms to help realize the food security drive within their communities, local tabloids have intimated.  The community farms cultivated for this year are for groundnuts, cassava and swamp rice expected to booster food needs for that agriculturally viable district. According to reports, the initiative was being developed by Fambul Tok, a post war local NGO with mission to unite people through community engagements.


Boat Owners Beat Military Officer


One Sgt. Charles Koroma of the 15th Battalion, Lungi Garrison was early this week reportedly beaten by some boat owners for raising an alarm for over loading. According to reports the Boat owner and four of his crew members got rudely at the military personnel when he showed concern for the safety of passengers onboard the overburdened boat plying the sea route from Lungi to Freetown. The boat is alleged to have on board a large quantity of iron rods and cement, including condiments and other assorted items in addition to passengers.  The furious boat owners reportedly pounced on the soldier and
mercilessly beat him up to the sustenance of wounds. The matter was taken to the Lungi Police Station and the assailants arrested. However, community elders were said to have prevailed on the officer to drop the matter after a compensation payment of Le2m to him.


11 Rescued and 1 Drowned at Sea


Local tabloids have it that eleven passengers were on 7th July rescued at Sea by the Maritime Wing of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces. According to reports the passengers were on board two different out board machine boats heading from Yeliboya to Magazine Wharf in Freetown when they had a fuel shortage and at the same time experienced bad weather. The wailing passengers were said to have been swiftly rescued when distress call was made. But reports however say that a body discovered at Tombo Wharf might have been a victim of that disaster.


Three Remanded for Fake Bank Notes


Three accused persons, Omaru Munu, Bai Sesay and Francis Dominic Boima were on the 22nd July 2010 sent to jail by Magistrate Steven Conteh of Court No 1 for being in possession of fake bank notes. They were charged with conspiracy and fraud. The particulars of offences state that the accused were on 1st May and 27th May this year arrested by police with Ten and Five Thousand Leones counterfeit notes of the resized family notes recently introduced by the APC government. Matter was adjourned to today.


Cement Price Hits to Le 40,000 per Bag

 

Local tabloids have alleged that the price of a bag of cement has over the weekend unexpectedly shot up from Le 33,000 to Le 40,000. According to reports the price did not only go up but business men are now hoarding the commodity causing many builders to become frustrated over the hike in prices and the scarcity of the commodity in the market.
