Kailahun Takes Lead in Free Health Care


Reports filtering in from Kailahun District, East of Sierra Leone say due to cooperation from beneficiaries of the Free Health Care delivery service, infant and maternal mortality rates have reduced drastically. This has reportedly received commendation from the District Medical Officer, Dr. David Boom who is said to have lauded the success of the initiative in that part of the country.  Reports further say that a new maternal and Child health aid training School has been also very instrumental in support the Free Health Care in the district..


Minister Storms Kissy Mental Home


The Deputy Minister of Health and Sanitation has reportedly reopened the store for Kissy Mental Home after being closed down for a week, thereby depriving inmates of essential and regular food and drug supplies.  The matter was brought to the attention of the minister who wasted no time to rush to the hospital to re-pen the store, the keeper said to be currently at large. 


FBC Students on Youth Sensitization Tour


A group of students of Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone will be reportedly conducting a month long youth sensitization tour in the Northern Province of Sierra Leone. According to reports the purpose of the tour is to encourage the young to embrace the commission and embark on meaning education and other trainings.  Statistics class the Northern Province as being among the districts with the highest number of drop outs, with the situation seem not to improve.  The tour will allegedly target three chiefdoms all the Bombali District.


Parliament Queries Social Welfare Ministry


The Public Accounts Committee in parliament on Thursday reportedly summoned the Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Childrens Affairs to answer to queries raised in the 2008 Accountant Generals reports. According to reports the Ministry was asked to explain why they did not provide an official statement and quarterly reports in respect to donor funds amounting to Le. 775.48m (Seven Hundred and Seventy-five Million, Four Hundred and Eighty Thousand five Hundred Leones). The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Brima Rogers allegedly told the committee that the documents were not presented because they were yet to be collection from the implementing patners, UNICEF and the Accountant Generals office. The members of the Accounts Committee reportedly advised that the ministry did everything possible to get them a copy.


Chamber of Commerce to Award Young Entrepreneurs


Reports have disclosed that the Sierra Leone Chambers of Commerce with support from ECOWAS commission will be organizing an awards ceremony for young business entrepreneurs who have innovation in the energy sector. The selection of the award winners as reported will be done both at national and regional levels. The Sierra Leone Chamber of Commerce has reportedly already set up an awards committee to select  the winners. The lucky winners will be given the opportunity to participate in the ECOWAS business Forum in Abidjan in October this year.


Domestic Tax Department to be Opened at NRA


The Acting Commissioner General of the NRA has reportedly informed that Domestic Tax Department will soon be opened at the parastatal. According to reports Tax Consultants have already been approached to form a Union that will help to activate the department and regulate its functions for more revenue.


Professor Gbamanja Commission ropes Teachers


Commenting on governments white paper release as to how students could be aided to improve academic performance, local news outlets have said the Prof. Gbamanja commission which was assigned the task has indicted teachers for drop in educational standards. The commission is reported to have claimed that poor performance of students in Public examinations is as a result of unethical, immoral and general attitude of teachers.


UK Minister Visits Sierra Leone


The UK Minister for International Development, Stephen OBrien according to media reports is touring Sierra Leone since past Friday 30
th July 2010. This visit which marks the first by a Minister of the new United Kingdom coalition government will chance MP Stephen OBrien to dialogue with government officials, visit development projects supported by DFID, and see the impact that the Free Health Care initiative is having on reducing maternal and infant mortality.
