50/50 Group Trains Regent Women on Leadership


Women in the Regent community, western rural district have reportedly benefited from a capacity building training on leadership organized by the 50/50 group. According to reports, the organization had over the years trained thousands of women across the country to take part in active politics. The training at Regent targeted womens leaders and civil society activities that have potentials to bring about development in that community.


APC Threaten to Kill SLPP Supporters


Reports allege that misguided APC supporters at Mile 91 in the Tonkolili District last week Thursday  threatened kill all SLPP supporters in that district ahead of the 20112 elections for the massive turnout of people on that day at the gender policy workshop organized  by the SLPP Womens Wing.  The workshop which is being held in all the districts across the country was said to have drawn women from all political parties in Tonkolili who converged at Mile 91 to participate.  What reportedly angered the APC was when the women in attendance openly expressed regret for not voting for the SLPP in the 2007 elections.  However, SLPP Womens Wing leader was said to have told party supporters not to take heed of such a dastard statement.


Flooding Leaves Hundred Homeless


Hundreds of residents in Blama Town in the Kenema District are reported to have been rendered homeless as a result of flood that took over the town with a population of about three hundred people. Properties worth millions of Leones were also reported damaged in addition.  According to reports the township used to experience the occurrence of flood but not to the magnitude of the recent one. Authorities have been tasked for their negligence over the years in not finding solution for the frequent occurrence of that natural disaster. 


350,000 Cashew Seedlings Donated to Salone


A local Non-Governmental Organization, Kamcashew Enterprises has reportedly donated three hundred and fifty thousand cashew seedlings to the Ministry of Agriculture for onward distribution to farmers in nine of the twelve districts in the provinces. Cashew cultivation is said to have once been a prosperous farming activity in Sierra Leone, but died with the demise of the Sierra Leone Produce Marketing Board. The boost for farmers in that direction will reportedly put them on good footing to resume cultivation on a large scale.


ACC Schools Makeni Youths on the Fight Against Corruption


The regional office of the Anti Corruption Commission in Makeni last weekend brought together various youth groups in a sensitization workshop on the fight against corruption. The youth groups were said to have been schooled on the dos and donts in the war on corruption and corrupt practices. Participants reportedly took the workshop as an opportunity to be informed on what are to be avoided and how to support the commission in tackling the menace in society. The ACC was highly commended for by the people for such a laudable effort according to reports.


Armed Robbers Fire at Police in Kono


Reports filtering from Kono District say armed robbers last week Wednesday night opened fire at police personnel attached to the Tonkoro Police Station in Koidu City. The unprovoked attack reportedly came as a surprise to the police but the robbers were said to have been engaged to a defeating point as they had to flee after continuous return fire from the police. Two suspects, including an ex-soldier are reported to be in custody after they were rounded up on board a black Mitsubishi car with registration ACY 111.


Orphanage Donates to Orphanage


Raining Season Orphanage situated along Wilkinson Road in western Freetown on Thursday 29th July donated a consignment of food item to another orphanage known as  Network on Children in Need (NCN)  located within the Mayemi Community at Allen Town in the east. The donated items included bags of rice, cartons Maggie cubes, gallons of cooking oil and other condiments.  This gesture was reportedly in furtherance of the existing cordial relationship between the two organizations.


SALWACO Board to Face Parliament


The Board of Directors of the Sierra Leone Water Company (SALWACO) is expected to face the parliamentary oversight committee on Energy and Water Resource today. The purpose of the meeting according to reports is to give a detailed account of the boards activities to the committee for the last three years in fulfillment of the committees mandate to oversee all functions of the company.
