In an effort to derive more benefit from cocoa products by farmers in the agricultural rich Kailahun District in eastern Sierra Leone, community stakeholders in the district last month formed and launched an Agricultural Trading Company known as Tewoh Agricultural Farmersí Trading Company. The ceremony took place at the 1973 built Town Barray in Pendembu, Upper Bambara Chiefdom.
In his welcome statement, the chairman of the programme, Mr. Thomas Juana thanked the people of Kailahun District for brining up such a brilliant idea, noting that the people of Kailahun are determined this time around to ensure maximum benefit from their cocoa production. He dismissed rumours that the company will slide back into failure as it happened with other farming organization in the past. He advised farmers to be more united and love one another so that their plans would be actualized in the shortest possible time.
Formally launching the company, the paramount chief of Upper Bambara Chiefdom, PC Cyril Foray Gondor said the Government of Sierra Leone was looking forward to farming organizations that could champion the challenges faced by them in marketing their own locally produced commodities.¬† He noted that the move taken by Tewoh Agricultural Farmersí Tradining Company was a step in the right direction. Chief Gondor maintained that the kind of leader that the company has chosen in the person of Mr. Aloysius Bockarie Ansumana as coordinator demonstrates the companyís readiness to forge ahead as he described the coordinator as a well known and hardworking personality.¬†
He concluded by pledging his support to the newly formed organization, though he hastened to warn farmers to avoid previous mistakes that their predecessors had made. He appealed to them to gather their produce together in larger quantities for eventual sale if they hoped to maximize profit.
The coordinator, Mr. Bockarie Ansumana who doubles as the founder of Muloma Womenís Development Association (MUMOSA) said many farming organizations from the various chiefdoms in the district insisted on his leading them in actualizing the formation of the organization.¬† He said with the support of the farmers the company was sure of getting more benefit for their produce, adding that his leadership does not believe in making vain promises but action.¬† He concluded by appealing to the farmers to bring their produce to the company for better prices.
All farmers present agreed to adhere to the admonishment to gather their produce together for collective and profitable sale.
