Bike Riders Clash with Police


Commuters that prefer quick access to destinations by the hire of commercial motor bikes remained stranded for the rest of the day on Wednesday and Thursday when riders refused to work due to undue harassment from the police. This reportedly led to the arrest of many commercial Bike Riders who spent the night in police custody. Reports however say that they declared Up- Gun Roundabout a no go area for Police as they accuse them of making life very difficult for them since they realized that many youths now preferred commercial bike riding to other jobs. They reportedly blame the mess on government that has failed to provide jobs for them. .


86 Return Home from Iraq


Reports have revealed that eighty six Sierra Leoneans who were working in Iraq have returned home for poor conditions of service in that war turn country. According to reports the returnees accuse the company under which they were working of giving them pittances far below what their colleagues from other countries receive. They are also said to be frustrated over subcontracting them to another company.  Reports allege that before laving Sierra Leone for Iraq they signed a contract with a company called SABER but their services were later sold to another company known as Torres upon arrival.  Their other reason for calling it quit was the war prone environment they were deployed.


District Officers to Start Work in November

 

The Deputy Minister II of Internal Affairs, Local Government and Rural Development, Mr. Hadiru Kalokoh has reportedly disclosed that District Officers (DOS) will be reinstated by November this year in spite of opposition concerns that their functions will usurp those of Chief Administrators and hence undermining the Local Government Act. An inspection and fact finding tour to assess the facilities for DOs in respective district headquarter towns has been conducted, the report continues.  The Minister is however quoted by local tabloids as saying that the roles of the DOs and the Chiefdom administrators will be completely different.


ECOWAS Trains Volunteers


Local tabloids say ECOWAS has yesterday completed a two-day training workshop on volunteerism at Lils Restaurant, King Herman Road in Freetown. According to reports the ECOWAS Volunteerism was launched an 10th March this year with the aim of using volunteers to participate in reconciliation and rehabilitation in crisis affected countries but not that of their origin in order to play a level playing field.


Man Charged for Child Cruelty


Reports from Kono say police have arrested and detained 35 years old Joseph Dwinji for splashing hot water on the face of a ten-year-old Kadiatu Kondeh. According to reports the accident took place at Kumoroh Village in the Nimikoro Chiefdom after some exchange of words that the man did not take lightly. The Victim has been admitted whilst Joseph Dwinji has been charged on 3 counts of wounding with intent and cruelty to a child all contrary to the law of Sierra Leone. Violations against Women and Children are reported to be on the increase in that part of the country of late.


Immigration Embarks on Massive Sensitization


The Regional Immigration Office in the East has reportedly embarked on massive sensitization campaign in the Kailahun and Kono Districts. The purpose of the sensitization is to thoroughly engage the residents of the two districts in order to track down   malpractices against immigration rules since the districts border with Guinea and Liberia with more than 53 illegal crossing points. The people were also advised to obtain required documents when they want to travel.


Principal Accused of Embezzling Examination Fees

 

Student of All-Ghaddafi Comprehensive Academy in Bo local media reports claim have dragged their Principal, Abdul Karim Sesay to the Anti-Corruption Commission after discovering that he had chopped their fees paid for just concluded Basic Education certificate Examination. The principal reportedly failed to register the children with WAEC for the exams. The aggrieved students and concerned parents have requested for proper auditing of the principal. The matter is under intense investigations.


Girl Friend Dies in Lovers Room


One Kumba Shar is said to have passed away last Wednesday 4th August 2010 in her boyfriends room, one Pa Ansu Sylvanus Momoh in Kenema. The 52 year-old boyfriend according to reports dragged and dumped the corpse of the 30 year old deceased at a nearby junction where the latter was discovered by passers-by. Police have arrested Pa Momoh who is now helping Police to investigate the matter.
