DfID Raises Concern over Misuse of Donor Funds

Local tabloids say the Freetown office of the British Department for International Development (DFID) has given stern warning to the Government of Sierra Leone to effectively use public funds. According to reports DfIDs Deputy Economic Adviser, Ilava Mahdi in a recent meeting urged the government to find a way forward for proper public financial management since British tax payers are scrutinizing DFIF for how their monies and used.

 

Maternal Mortality Still High

 

In spite of the ongoing Free Health Care initiative introduced by the government, reports claim that maternal mortality is still on the increase in the country. The concern was reportedly raised by the Reproductive and Child Health Care programme manager in the Health Ministry, Dr. Sarian Kamara. He is said to have blamed the problem on ignorance on the part of pregnant women coupled with their refusal to make timely visits to delivery facilities. 

 

Germany Boosts Free Health Care

 

The government of the Federal Republic of Germany is reported to have donated the sum of 500,000 to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) for food supplement to about 50,000 pregnant women and nursing mothers including 12,000 malnourished children in the country. This amount according to reports is intended to complement governments effort in the implementation of the free health care service country wide. The Chief Medical Officer in the ministry, Dr. Kisito Daoh is reported to have described the donation as apt and timely given the severe cases of malnutrition in the country.

 

WIA Soldiers Receive Benefits

 

The Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Defence has reportedly commenced the payment of benefits to military personnel wounded in action referred to as soldiers Wounded in Action (WIA).  This is a class of soldiers that sustained injuries while prosecuting the countrys 11 years long rebel war. The payment according to reports was only effected after a mounting pressure from the affected ex-soldiers on the House Parliament to endorse their payment packages.

 

Doctors Concerned at the Alarming Rate of Impostors 


The Sierra Leone Medical and Dental Council (SLMDC) has expressed concern over what members describe as the reckless use of the title Dr. by many untrained and unqualified medical practitioners including traditional healers, reports allege.  In an apparent bid to clamp down on impostors, the association has reportedly called on the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, the Pharmacy Board, and the Independent Media Commission to collaborate with them in enforcing laws that regulate the use of the title as well as the banning of unregulated advertisements on medical products. 


Human Trafficker Slammed Jail Sentences  


Court reports say Justice Sam Margai of Makeni High Court past Friday 6th August this year sentenced one Abu Sesay to seven years jail sentence for human trafficking contrary to Section 2 (1) of the Anti trafficking Act of 2005. According to police evidence, Abu Sesay recruited a 14 year-old Anthony Tejan Jalloh and five others into his criminal empire at Masuba in Makeni. 

 

NAS to Organize 2nd Childrens conference


The Director of National AIDS Secretariat (NAS), Dr. Brima Kargbo is reported to have disclosed that they will be organizing the 2nd National Childrens Conference in October this year. The conference is said to seek to educate
and increase the level of awareness of children at national level on the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Sierra Leone. Moreover the second childrens conference is reportedly intended to formulate a three-year action plan that would focus on the precautionary measures and prevention of the pandemic among children.
