As part of their corporate social responsibility, one of Sierra Leoneís leading Telecommunication Companies, Zain on Friday 13th¬†August, 2010 donated to families of victims of last weekís mudslide at Owen Street, off Mountain Cut in Freetown that left over a dozen dead and many more injured, most of them children and women. As a company that has the welfare of Sierra Leoneans at heart, Zain which has become a household name for their unrivalled products, were obliged to meet and share their sad sentiments with the affected community and sympathize with the bereaved families with the presentation of a condolence package. The donated items comprised of cash sums, 6 bags of imported rice, 20 gallons of cooking oil and an assortment of condiments as well as used clothing, bedding materials and toiletries.

In a solemn ceremony while presenting the items to community leaders on behalf of the affected families, Zainís Managing Director Ted Sauti Phiri said as a company with subscribers in every nook and cranny of the country, they were also greatly affected. He described the disaster as unfortunate and very disheartening, something he said that required collective national mourning.

ďSierra Leoneans are one people and those who have died will never be replaced but consoling their relatives will go a long way in solacing their trauma,Ē he stated, adding that it was their social obligation to associate themselves with the woes and good tidings of their subscribers that are all over the country.

In his brief statement, representative of the Office of National Security (ONS), Mr. Mohamed Bah said although the donation would not bring back the lost souls, it would nonetheless serve as a relief to the affected families who are to start rebuilding their lives from the dust. He expressed thanks and appreciation to Zain for always relating well with their customers and the nation as a whole in times of joy and sorrow. He also implored the bereaved families to continue taking heart, and advised them to be very careful in expending the monies that they are supposed to use to be able to be relocate to safer areas to avoid reoccurrence of such ugly scenario.

Community leaders, the bereaved families and youths expressed their gratefulness to Zain for their kind and timely gesture.
