100 Police Trained on Human Rights Issues


Local tabloids have revealed that 100 police officers past Monday started a week-long training workshop on human rights issues at the Police Training School at Hastings, Western Rural District. According to reports the significance of the training is to prepare junior police officers on how to effectively handle human rights cases as they are reported.  The training will reportedly empower the officers to professionally handle child right issues as well as other human rights abuses.


237 Students Graduate from Don Bosco


237 students have over the weekend reportedly graduated from the Don Bosco Fambul vocational centre. According to reports, the graduation ceremony took place at the St. Anthonys Hall, Syke Street in Freetown.  The grandaunts reportedly went through a one-year-six months training exercise in various vocational trades. As part of package, the 237 graduates received start-up kits each worth Le300, 000. Don Bosco Fambul is an organization that caters for vulnerable and under- privileged youths to transform their lives into useful people in society.

 

4 Arraigned for Selling Unregistered Sims


The National Telecommunication Commission (NATCOM), in a joint operation with police on Monday 2nd August along Goderich Street in Freetown arrested and detained 4 suspects for selling unregistered Sims. The four suspects on Wednesday reportedly made their first appearance before Magistrate J.O Wellington of Court No. 2.   They are said to have pleaded not guilty to the charge. The matter was adjourned to 26th August 19, 2010.


Tombo Appeal for more Police Presence


The Headman of Tombo Village in the Western Rural District, Allie Jappa Bangura has on behalf of his subjects appealed to the Inspector General of Police, Brima Acha Kamara to provide additional personnel to the Police Station in his community. According to the Headman, his community is fast expanding due to the new settlements being established in the area, but insisted that the current strength of police cannot effectively police the area.


Rotary Club Monitors Hospital Construction in Bo


The Rotary Club, Bo chapter in collaboration with the childrens hospital management committee recently held a joint meeting at the Fair View Lodge in Bo City. The purpose of the meeting, according to reports was to discuss critical issues relating to the childrens hospital which is currently under construction along the Bo-Taiama Highway. The monitoring exercise by the Bo Rotary club is to ensure the effective management of the hospital for sustainability when the donor sponsorship expires. The club has also been demanded to define the services and facilities expected to be provided by the hospital after completion.


Momodu Koroma Declares for SLPP Flag Bearer


Alhaji Momodu Koroma former Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) running mate in the 2007 elections last Wednesday made a public declaration for the partys flag bearer position in Freetown. According to reports, Mr. Koroma has been allegedly engaged in moderate consultations with party elders all over Sierra Leone.  With the outcome of the consultative meeting said to be positive, he sees himself having better opportunity to win the contest. 


 Bumbuna light for Bumbuna Town in December


The Paramount Chief of Kalasongaya Chiefdom, Tonkolili District, has reportedly disclosed that the people of Bumbuna will celebrate this years Christmas with electricity from the Bumbuna Hydro Electric Dam. Chief Alimany Bockarie Yalan Koroma III is reported to have confirmed that SALINI Construction Company (SALCOST) was running underground electric cables for the electrification of Bumbuna town. Residents reports say have welcomed the development.

 

Bank Freezes Account of Illegal Finance Group

 

Local tabloids have alleged that Wealth Builders Micro-Finance Trust account has been frozen by the Sierra Leone Commercial Bank. This action came as a result of an order from the Central Bank of Sierra Leone, stating that the institution was not registered to run a financial institution in the country. According to reports, hundreds of Sierra Leoneans have contributed millions of leones into wealth builders account and that the Central Bank will soon look into the matter to see that people get back their monies.
