Dr. Alfred Sallia Fawundu
Chairman, ACC Advisory Board (2008 – 2010)"From dust we came and to dust we shall return"

Today we are here not only to mourn the loss of an illustrious son of this great nation Dr. Alfred Sallia Fawundu, who was appointed Chairman of the Anti Corruption Commission Advisory Board in 2008, but to thank God for the gift of a well accomplished African, a man whose life transcends the mean horizons of ethnic, religious, racial and gender sentiments.

My relatively short association with him in the Commission has been quite rewarding, the courtesy he accorded all without discrimination, the interest and words of encouragement at every opportunity shall remain immeasurable and unmatched. As a Commission, we shall surely miss him.

He now lies encased and subdued by the cold hands of death but his fire shall continue to glow in the hearts of all true and God fearing people who may have had the privilege of meeting him.

Dr. Alfred Sallia Fawundu, lived what could only be described as an accomplished life, in his professional, as well as private life and  for this we should be grateful. Often though, with a feeble and finite sense, we have tended to question God’s divine place in our lives but He always know what is best.  And many a time I have pondered, that indeed it is not so much how long we live but rather how well we live.

A week before he passed away, he stopped at my office as he usually did and encouraged me to continue  the difficult but not impossible job of the Commission, offered words of optimism for this country’s development.

Intellectually and morally fertile as the late Dr. Fawundu was, he spared no time in transferring knowledge and expertise on a variety of subjects and life as a whole at every opportunity he had.

A man with a strong sense of nationhood, a man who had not lost faith in Sierra Leone and before leaving that day said to me after our discussion on other subjects “Buya in life always listen to the other side”. A philosophy he told me has been his guiding principle in his dealings with humanity.

In all our dealings, he has never mentioned in our discussions vain subject matters. He was interested in how Sierra Leone would become rich and not how he would become richer, and how Africa would take the fore stage in development of the world. He was well and way ahead of his time. He was truly humanity’s cause.

Chief Aunty Ruth, Sallia jnr, Musa and the rest of the family, we join you in this great loss but may we encourage ourselves that our departed Husband, father, uncle, colleague, and friend deserves a place among those who have died in the faith and who may by the Grace of God earn a place in the mansion which our Savior Jesus Christ had long gone before to prepare for us.

And as I recall our very last meeting before he left my office the Monday before the fateful Sunday and turning back to see if I was still there, I imagine he echoes the final words of the Great Apostle St. Paul to the younger Apostle Timothy in the Holy Scriptures.

“… The time has come for me to depart. I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race, and I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness which the Lord the righteous judge will award to me on that day…”

On behalf of the Advisory Board, Management and Staff of the Anti Corruption Commission, I pray that the peace and favor of God will remain with the Fawundu Family and MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PREFECT PEACE.
