In Sierra Leone, AIG Lenghor Vows Legal Action against Tabloid

The Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police in the Sierra Leone Police in-charge of Operations Morrie Lenghor has vowed to take legal action against a certain local tabloid over an article published on the front page of their Tuesday 24th edition captioned "Police Officer Questions President Koromas Decision".

According to the article, the reporter claimed that AIG Lenghor is questioning the recent appointment of former Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police Francis Munu to become the Inspector General (IG) of the Sierra Leone Police. The reporter further claimed that the AIG told him that he is contemplating to resign and join the Sierra Leone Bar Association to practice Law. Furthermore, the reporter claimed that the appointment of AIG Lenghor as Acting IG when the former IG Brima Acha Kamara proceeds on leave some months ago seems to have geared up the AIG as an imminent successor to Brima Acha Kamara. Above all, the reporter claimed that all these information were disclosed to him by the AIG himself during an interview.

In response to this article, AIG Lenghor told newsmen that he has not on any one occasion given an interview to any journalist on such an issue less to talk about him being contacted by any reporter from that tabloid. He hastened to state that the whole article is baseless, unfounded and written with rancor in a bid to tarnish and destroy the good image he has fought to build for years now. He stressed that he has no problem with His Excellencys appointment of Mr. Francis Munu and can in no way or for any reason question it.

"AIG Munu like any other officer in the force has done well in the force and has the full qualifications to be appointed IG by H.E, so why should I question the appointment when I fully know that AIG Munu deserves it," said AIG Lenghor. He said he had already booked a flight to travel out of Sierra Leone on official duties, but had to cancel it yesterday just to meet journalists and personally put the records straight over the false allegations written by the said tabloid.

He said whilst he did not want to take any journalist to court, if the tabloid did not retract, he would take legal action against them.

Also speaking, the Head of Communication and Community Relations in the Sierra Leone Police Superintendent Memunatu Conteh told newsmen that the article came as a surprise to all of them, stating that AIG Morrie Lenghor is like a fountain of respect and honor in the SLP and has the highest dignity within the force.

"The whole police force holds AIG Lenghor in high esteem" said Superintendent Conteh, while calling on journalists to cross-check their stories with reliable sources before going to press.
