Gruesome  Road  Accident  Kills One


A  gruesome road  accident at  Tombo  Park in the Western Rural District  last Tuesday left one dead and several others injured reports say. According to reports, the victims were  at  the  lorry park  waiting for a commercial vehicle to convey them to Freetown, when a tipper truck  lost control and vehemently   rammed into a  stationary vehicle ,a military truck , a structure and  the victims. The deceased  was  taken  to the Mortuary while  the injured  are  currently responding to treatment at the hospital . Police are investigating the matter reports say.


Defence  Minister  Calls Security Meeting


The Minister for  Defence  Rtd.  Captain  Alfred  Paolo Conteh has reportedly called a security meeting over the recent landing of a helicopter at the Choithram Memorial Hospital  at Hill Station  in Freetown. The Minister reportedly disclosed that he had no idea about the landing of the helicopter and that was why he had called an urgent security meeting to address the security lapse. He reportedly informed that, the meting will ascertain the reason why there was a break in communication to  inform the  security apparatus about the landing reports added.


Teenage Pregnancy High In Moyamba

 

It has been reported that, the rate of teenage pregnancy is very high in the Moyamba District. It was alleged that, over one hundred single- parent  teenagers  between  the  ages of 13 and  16 are finding it very difficult to survive due to the lack of care by  their  partners. Reports further alleged that there is an increase in rape cases  in that district but victims often refused to  make reports  to the Police when such acts  are perpetrated against them. Residents in the district are calling on government and other stakeholders for their prompt intervention.


PDL to Contest in 2012 Elections


Reports have alleged that, the Sierra Leone Peoples Democratic League (PDL) recently announced  its  intention  to  participate  in the forthcoming Presidential and Parliamentary  elections slated for 2012 . The party has reportedly denied an allegation of boycotting the election as said by detractors. The party believes that there is still hope for Sierra Leone as they are determined to provide a new and brighter direction for the country reports say.


UNICEF Donates 12 Motorbikes to SLTU


Local tabloids have disclosed that, UNICEF recently  donated 12  brand new motorbikes to the  Sierra Leone Teachers Union [SLTU] through the Ministry of Education Youths and Sports  at a ceremony held at New England in Freetown. The purpose of the donation was to ensure that SLTU  effectively  monitor the  running of schools in the country especially those in remote areas for effective service delivery reports say. The Ministry of Education  and  SLTU appreciated the gesture and promised that  the motorbikes  will be used  for their intended purpose reports  added.

 

CGG  Meets Female Councilors


Campaign for Good Governance (CGG) in Collaboration with Action Aid- Sierra Leone, held a seminar with councilors across the country at the British Council Hall Tower Hill in Freetown. According to reports the meting was an experience sharing session  with regards challenges and problems faced by the participants in their respective wards and political parties.Reports say, a lot of  issues came up during the deliberations  among them was  womens participation in political governance.  CGG  and  Action Aid-Sierra Leone  have  therefore  expressed their determination to see that women  get  their 30%  quota in national decision making.


PPASL Engages Stakeholders on Abortion Law


Plan Parenthood Association of Sierra Leone (PPASL) has organized a -three -day advocacy workshop for development of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) on the review of the laws on abortion in Sierra Leone at John Street in Freetown. The objective of the workshop was to encourage participants to be able to develop IEC materials in order to review the laws on abortion in Sierra Leone. Participants reportedly frowned  at the  unsafe  methods of abortion used  by  unskilled  medical practitioners to terminate unwanted pregnancy  adding  that  this practice has resulted to several deaths among our young  girls reports say.


Salone  Scores High  On Malaria Control


Reports say the Malaria Control result on Sierra  Leone  published recently  is very encouraging. According to reports the pragmatic performance reports for December 1st to February 28  2010  (quarter 7 of global fund phase 1) was rated in July 2010 as B1 which is 96% overall performance. It has been reportedly revealed that the excellent result came as a sequel of the  government  and  donor  partners  commitment to prevent and control  the  infection.
