In Sierra Leone, Councilor ĎSmall Borborí Mobilizes Support for Health Center

SLPP Councilor Ibrahim Kabbah aka Small Borbor representing Ward 331 in Constituency within the Western Area Rural District has pledged the sum of Le.100,000 (One Hundred Thousand Leones) monthly to the development of the Goderich Community Health Center

Councilor Kabba made this pronouncement while addressing community members from various wards within the constituency in a community development meeting held on Sunday 22nd August 2010 at the village Community Center.

The SLPP councilor informed the gathering that he was relentless in drawing the attention of the council to the needs of the health centre. He said in addition to the pressure piled on the Rural Council, he also deemed it expedient to initiate a fund-raising campaign all geared towards alleviating the plight of the Health Unit especially in the area of rehabilitation.

"That is why as a first step to show the community that I mean well for them, I have decided to make monthly allocation of Le100, 000 (One hundred thousand Leones) to the center which I hope others will follow," he announced amidst thunderous applause. He said his commitment was borne out of the fact that centre was gradually becoming a cemetery with inadequate medical and infrastructural facilities to salvage the population that comprises Wards 331, 332, and 333.

The challenge thrown by Councilor Small Borbor was instantaneously embraced by another community patriot, Papa Kamara who also announced a commitment of similar amount to the development fund on monthly basis

The community initiative to give the health centre a face lift was greeted by the Community Health Officer, Baba Musa as a laudable venture who said that promises to rehabilitate the center by authorities have been plunged in uncertainty over the period. He lamented over the effect of the poor state of the centre which he said had often forced them to make referrals to the Lumley Hospital. "We lack structural capacity to handle many case even though most of the patients insist on distance and cost to Lumley, but we have no option," he informed. He said since the center was constructed some 15 years ago during the reign of the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC), no significant repairs have been made to the structure.

The building housing the Goderich Health Center has been in ruins for a long period now with damaged doors, windows and no wards to admit women after delivery. The problem is further compounded by frequent power shortages and the absence of laboratory facility. It was hoped that with the introduction of the Free Health Care initiative the centers would be upgraded with the capacity to handle the increasing number of cases of pregnant women and lactating mothers among others.

The essence of the meeting that drew both local authorities and medical personnel of the center was to call on stakeholders to rally round Councilor Kabba to put mechanisms in place to improve on the facility as well as staff capacity.
