Mass Demolition at Crab Town-

 

The Ministry of Lands in collaboration with the Freetown City Council and the Sierra Leone Police last Tuesday embarked on a massive demolition of illegal structures within the Crab Town Community, Aberdeen in Freetown.  The excise is reportedly aimed at removing squatters from areas authorities have described as unsafe following the recent environmental disaster in Freetown. Reports reveal that 14 make-shift structures  were destroyed, followed by the issuance of strong warning by the Lands Minister, Dr. Sandy to other  squatters that their failure to immediately vacate the unsafe structures will lead to drastic measures against them.


4.5 Billion Leones for Kenema City Hall


The Kenema City Council and the Overseas Trading Construction Company have reportedly signed an agreement for the completion of the Kenema City Hall and council administrative building. According to reports the construction of the City Hall started over 20 years ago but work remained stalled for lack of funding. The mayor of that City, Chief Brima Kargbo has described the venture as a blessing. Reports say the 4.5 billion Leones was provided by the Government of Sierra Leone as grant to complete the project.

Imminent Cabinet reshuffle Panics Ministries


Local tabloids have alleged that the changes that recently occurred in the military and the police will soon hit Cabinet Ministers. According to reports, panic has gripped most of the ministries as ministers become jittery as to what would be their fate when the cabinet reshuffle takes effect. It is being also revealed that President Koroma seldom gives prior notice to government functionaries before he removes them from office.


Seven Day Ultimatum for Photographers


The Minister of Information and Communication, Alhaji Ibrahim Ben Kargbo on Wednesday reportedly ordered members of the Photographers Union to quit the photographic Unit of the Ministry of Information and Communication at Tower Hill in Freetown. Alhaji I.B Kargbo is reported to have made the order following the refusal of the Union to grant access to cable television group to use same facility. The seven-day ultimatum to the photographers to quit the unit is said to be non-negotiable, and their failure to adhere will lead to eviction.


2 Return from Rota-virus Symposium


Two senior medical practitioners in the persons of Dr Clifford Kamara and Dr Thomas Samba have reportedly returned home from the 9th Session of the International Rotavirus Symposium held early this week in Johannesburg, South Africa. The symposium reportedly brought together scientists, clinicians, public health professionals, immunization leaders, representatives from the vaccine industries and members of the donor community to update the research and public health agenda relating to rotavirus as well as its vaccine. Reports say the Sierra Leone delegates were sponsored by the Sabin Vaccine Institute to participate in the symposium.


NEC Ends Consultative Meeting in Kenema


The National Electoral Commission (NEC) has reportedly engaged stakeholders including Civil Society organizations, Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC) and the various Political Parties in a consultative meeting recently held in Kenema City. The purpose of the meeting was for NEC to explain the 2010 to 2014 development strategy plan to all stakeholders leading to the enhancement of the conduct of future free and fair general elections.


Three Players Depart for Turkey


Two Sierra Leonean Basketball Players and their coach have reportedly left the shores of Sierra Leone last Monday to attend a Youth Camp on Basketball in Turkey. According to reports the event is going to last for a week; and the Sierra Leonean delegates are expected to build on what they are learning during the period. The venture reports alleged will help to develop   basket ball in the country.
