In Sierra Leone, Acha Kamara is Leaving a Proud Police Force Behind

The outgoing Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Brima Acha Kamara has expressed pride in the Police Force he was leaving behind for the people of Sierra Leone in so far as their international standing in peacekeeping missions was concerned. He was speaking whilst addressing contingent of one hundred (100) police personnel of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) who yesterday Sunday August 29th 2010 left the shores of the country on a peacekeeping mission in Darfur, southern Sudan. The contingent comprised of sixty-one men and thirty-nine women, and they are expected to serve initially for the period of six months.

Addressing the departing personnel at the Senior Police Officers Mess Kingtom on Friday, the outgoing Inspector General of Police, Mr. Brima Acha Kamara said the process of sending personnel on peace missions started with the collaborative efforts of the Canadian and German Governments that led to the sending of seven peacekeepers to Haiti sometime back.  He said as a result of their excellent performance, the SLP had been contracted on various other peace missions across the world.

At present there are about sixty-three police peacekeepers in Darfur and eight in Somalia from Sierra Leone, he disclosed, while admonishing the new peacekeepers to put up best practices in their mission.

The outgoing Inspector-General also revealed that in October this year, another batch of one hundred and fifty police personnel will be departing Sierra Leone to join those already serving in Darfur.  He said apart from contributing to world peace, his administration made it possible for the generation of wealth and morale-boosting to individual peacekeepers.

For most of those who have benefited from peacekeeping duties abroad, the thought of even building a house or buying a personal vehicle prior to their deployment was almost non-existent, but today, their lives and status have changed, the outgoing Inspector-General impressed.  He also said that their exposure to International Peacekeeping duties would enable them acquire skills and knowledge that will benefit them, the SLP and the country as a whole.

As some of you will be put in command positions in your mission areas, the experiences to be gained from those positions will transform you into very seasoned Officers, in addition to making you self-assertive - a quality which all good officers must possess for their careers to be successful, Brima Acha Kamara stated.

Mr. Acha Kamara ended by noting that as he was about to exit the SLP, he was more than proud to leave behind the very important legacy that it was during his tenure as Inspector General  that the SLP was exposed to peacekeeping duties abroad.

We have recently received a request from the United Nations for the SLP to train and send Female Police Units (FPUs) on such missions abroad, and that would not have been possible if our men and women are not conducting themselves very well at their various command posts, the outgoing Police Boss said with a sense of satisfaction and deep pride at the legacy he was leaving behind him.
