The newly appointed Deputy Director General for the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), Mr. Sana Bernard Samura has on Saturday 28th August 2010 spoken exclusively to Awareness Times newspaper. Awareness Times travelled all the way up the northern-most District of Koinadugu where the new Deputy Director-General is an indigene and resident.

Awareness Times newspaper is the only newspaper in Sierra Leone that goes regularly into Koinadugu District and our reporters are always welcomed with good hospitality. This visit was no different and this writer was welcomed by the Paramount Chief and other Leaders including Mr. Samura himself who is a well-respected leader in the District.

Commencing the interview, Mr. Samura noted that he was born in Falaba of the Sulima Chiefdom of Koinadugu District in the Northern Province of Sierra Leone on 26th June 1955; he is married to Mrs. Ruth Hannah Samura, and they are blessed with three (3) children presently.

He continued by stating that upon completion of the Teacher Certificate Course in 1973, he picked up a teaching job and rose to the rank of Head Teacher in 1977, adding that due to his astute stance in controversial matters pertaining to Teaching, this earned him the confidence of the teachers to elect him as the Chairman of the Sierra Leone Teacher Union (SLTU) for the Koinadugu District; a position he held from 1977 to 1989.

He revealed further that to strengthen his educational career as a Teacher he pursued several course of studies and prominent amongst the courses of study was the Advanced Diploma in English Language Teaching from Leeds University in the United Kingdom; an educational qualification that is equivalent to a Masters degree in Education.

"I was appointed as Inspector of Schools in 1993 due to my hard work and dedication to whatever assignment was given to me by my supervisors. I finally retired as Inspector of Schools in 2005" he said pointing out that he feels delighted to be appointment as the Deputy Director of SLBC, a position which he promised the Nation he intends to treat with all seriousness it deserved.

The new Deputy Director-General used the opportunity of his chat with this newspaper to express his profound thanks and gratitude to the Chairman and Board of Trustees of SLBC for selecting him to such a position. He assured the Board and the people of Sierra Leone that he will do all he can to ensure that he lives up to the expectations of all Sierra Leoneans, especially the people of Koinadugu District".

Mr. Samura said he was looking forward to work in collaboration with the Director General of SLBC whom he promised to faithfully serve as an adviser and supporter of the Directors initiatives. He also extended his regards from Kabala to all staff of the corporation whilst expressing how he was hopeful of a cordial relationship with them.

He concluded by commending the government, especially President Koroma for giving up the Government ownership of the SLBS broadcasting institution to an independent broadcaster now known as SLBC.

"I hope that government alongside its development partners would continue to give support to and do all possible to ensure the success of the independent corporation at all times, he ended.

ENTIRE KOINADUGU APPLAUDS APPOINTMENT

When this writer arrived in Kabala over the past weekend, it was clear that the entire town and even beyond into the entire district greatly appreciated the appointment of one of their residents to such a lofty and important national position of service. This was reflected in the words of the residents.

Speaking to the Honorable Paramount Chief of Sengbeh Chiefdom who represents all other Koinadugu District Chiefs in Parliament, he gave his impression on the appointment of one of our sons as Deputy Director General of SLBC. Hon P.C Ali Balansama Marah (III) said that, on behalf of all the other 12 Paramount Chiefs and the people of Koinadugu District, he was expressing their thanks and appreciation to the Chairman and the Board of Trustees for appointing one of their sons to a highly placed position in the country. He said Koinadugu is happy because of the trust and respect they have for Mr. Sana Bernard Samura and they know that he will not let them down.

Speaking also, the Acting Chair of the Koinadugu District Council, Madam Rugie Marah expressed the commitment of the Koinadugu District Council towards supporting Mr. Samura in his new office and encouraged him to continue performing excellently as he was used to doing when he was inspector of schools. "Mr. Samura was my teacher in school and I believe in him as he is a man of his words who cannot be compromised easily; he is going to be an independent man helping to run an independent broadcaster," she ended.

Speaking on behalf of the youths of Koinadugu, Youth Leader Neneh Umu Mackie expressed their profound appreciation to the SLBC Board for such an opportunity being given to a man the youths consider as our father. She said they believe in the ability of Mr. Samura as they all know him as a performer and a man who can produce results whilst being fair to others.

WHY SAMURA WAS CHOSEN

Meanwhile, sources within the SLBC Board of Trustees indicate that Samura was chosen to complement the newly nominated Director-General Elvis Gbanabome Hallowell. We decided to settle on Sana Samura over the younger applicants primarily because of his maturity and supervisory experience in handling employees which we believe will complement the modern technology background of Hallowell one of our sources said.
