China Offers 23 Scholarships to Salone


Local tabloids intimate that at least 23 Sierra Leoneans have again received scholarships from the Chinese government in furtherance of the existing bilateral relationship between the two countries to pursue further education in that country in various disciplines such as agriculture, medicine, civil engineering ,journalism and many others at various post graduate levels. This has reportedly put the figure of Sierra Leoneans that have enrolled in various Chinese Universities to 330 since 1976.


Police Prosecutor Thrown Out of Court


Magistrate Emmanuella Harding of Court No.6 in Freetown on early this week reportedly ordered Police Prosecutor Mansaray M out of her court for alleged court malpractices. According to reports, the officer who is attached to the court falsely issued a bail bond to a defendant in a certain matter without the magistrates knowledge.  The magistrate is reported to have granted bail to the accused but she was unable to fulfill the bail condition, meaning that she was to have remained on remand in prisons till the next hearing but the officer used surreptitious means to release the accused. The officer also reportedly lied to the magistrate that the accused was in custody which proved to be false when the head of prisons was contacted.


Commonwealth to Organise Leadership Forum


Reports have disclosed that the Public Sector Reform Unit (PSRU) in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Government and the Institutional Development Division of the Common Wealth of Nations will be organizing a three-day leadership forum for government ministers and heads of parastatals from the 13th to the 15th September at the Miatta Conference Hall in Freetown. The workshop is said to focus on governments priorities and operations, understanding leadership roles, negotiation, skills and values for better achievement.


New Jersey Hosts SLPP Aspirant


It has been reported that the New Jersey Chapter of the SLPP in North America on Sunday hosted one of the partys intending flag bearer aspirants, Alhaji Momodu Koroma at a well attended general meeting of the chapter.  The former government minister was reportedly in the United States to make his intention for flag bearer position known to SLPP party Diaspora membership resident in America. He was reportedly heartily welcomed by the chapter members who are said to have commended him for such a bold step.  He is reported to have used the opportunity to appeal to the New Jersey chapter to be united and steadfast to ensure that the party is back to power.


SLAJ Prezo Commends Africell


Local tabloids say the President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists, BBCs Umaru Fofana recently commended Africell for conducting a transparent draw in the ongoing Find the Hidden Treasure Ramada Promotion. Mr. Fofana is alleged to have said that he was very proud of being an Africell subscriber; a GSM service provider he said demonstrates honesty in their dealings. He also called on all Africell subscribers to try their chances by sending a blank message to 777 and win a prize.

 

50\50 President decry low Participation in Politics

 

The newly elected President of the 50/50 Groups has reportedly expressed grave concern over the issue of few women participating in elections to occupy public offices. Haja Saimatu Kassim has reportedly revealed that various women organizations have been trying to encourage Sierra Leonean women to enter politics but there is no progress on the side of government. According to her women should not be back benchers in decision making at all levels and at all times.


Education Minister Warns Principals


Local tabloids say the Minister of Education, Youths and Sports, Dr. Minkailu Bah on Monday warned all principals and head teachers to desist from demanding extra charges for admission of pupils into Junior Secondary Schools. According to reports the Minister made this warning following complaints by parents and guardians that principals were extorting money from them for the admission of their children into JSSI. The minister has vowed to take action on anyone not abiding by government regulations.
