SIERRA LEONE ASSOCIATION OF ARCHIVISTS, LIBRARIANS

AND INFORMATION PROFESSIONALS (SLAALIP)

PRESS RELEASE

The attention of the Association has been drawn to a letter in the July 29 edition of one of the local tabloids insinuating that the Association is engaged in discussion of national politics. This is absolutely unfounded and malicious, intended to distract the Association from its serious objective of working towards the improvement of professional standards within the library and information profession. This is what it has been engaged in doing over the years. SLAALIP is a completely professional body. Born in 1970 as the Sierra Leone Library Association and then the Sierra Leone Association of Archivists, Librarians and Information Scientists at the Sierra Leone Library Board, thereby becoming its secretariat, SLAALIP has at no time had clandestine politics forming part of its deliberations. There has never been and nothing will ever necessitate such discussions.

On the recruitment of a Chief Librarian for the Sierra Leone Library Board, the letter in question is only trying to confuse unsuspecting minds. Our position is that professional standards should be the prime consideration, like it would apply in any other profession.

That is what we believe the Board will do. We are also calling on the supervising Minister, the Minister of Education, Youth and Sports to back this position. He already thought it wise to have appointed not only a professional, but an internationally renowned and result-oriented Sierra Leonean- born professor to head the Board. The entire membership of the Association noted that action of his. History will, without question, be favourable to him if he maintains consistency here-supporting professionalism. We believe that, based on this, he will. We want to emphasise that like it has been in the case of the past five Chief Librarians, the Association is not supporting any of the intending candidates. We have standards, not a candidate. We cannot exchange such standards for anything.

Finally, we want to appeal to proprietors and editors of newspapers to encourage their staff not to allow themselves to be used by some members of the public to promote their personal agenda through the peddling of calculated and venomous prevarications. All of us have always reminded ourselves that Sierra Leone can only be built by ourselves. Let us prove that now by moving beyond words and put action in motion in our various vocations.
