The Public Relations and Information Officer of the RSLAF, Lieutenant Yayah Sidi Brima on Tuesday 31st August, 2010 disclosed to Awareness Times that about Ninety-one (91) personnel of various ranks within the force have been promoted.  This new promotion arrangement has come in the wake of a dramatic change of guard in the Armed Forces with the appointment of a new Chief of Defence Staff.

According to Lieutenant Brima, the recent promotion was in addition to twenty-nine officers earlier promoted who he said have already been decorated with their new ranks at the Myohaung Officers Mess at the Wilberforce Army Barracks in western Freetown.  Out of the number of promotions made, fourteen Lieutenants were promoted to the rank of Captain, and fifteen Majors to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, he disclosed to our reporter in his Defence Headquarters office at Tower Hill.  He said it was the other batch of Sixty-two officers that have just been promoted on Wednesday 1st September from the rank of Captain to Major, who he said would be decorated on Tuesday 7th instant.

Lieutenant Brima allayed that in spite of criticisms, the 91 officers were promoted on merit. All Ninety-one officers got their promotions after having fulfilled the set of criteria varying from mandatory career courses, attainment of requisite duration in the rank to unblemished disciplinary record, he informed.

In another development, it was revealed yesterday that thirty-nine (39) cadet officers of the Direct Entry Commissioning Course (DECC) will be commissioned today, Friday 3rd September at the Armed Forces Training Center (AFTC), Benguema in eastern Freetown by His Excellency President Ernest Bai Koroma.  According to Defence Ministry source, among the 39 cadets to be commissioned today, nine of them were recruited from the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), first ever set of that countrys army personnel to be trained in Sierra Leone.
