22 Rescued at Sea

 

Local tabloid reports say twenty-two people, including five crew members traveling from Tombo to Plantain Island in an out board motor boat Kadija have been rescued by the Sierra Leone Navy in a Forward Operation Base (FOB)  exercise led by Sub -Lieutenant Philip Tairu. According to reports, the unit received a distress call at 10:30pm that a boat has developed some mechanical problems at sea, coupled with rough weather condition around the Plantain Island. A rescue team reports continue was immediately dispatched to the scene and successfully rescued the 22 people. The captain of the boat who was identified as Abu is said to have been arrested and detained at the Tombo Police Station for ignoring warnings from members of the Tombo Community about inclement weather at sea before departing.

 

Government Approves Statistics Budget


Newspaper reports  have it that the Parliamentary District Council Budget Oversight Committee has approved budget allocated to Statistics Sierra Leone after a thorough screening on the institutions expenditure of government funds. The budget reports went on is for the 2011 fiscal year.

 

E.U Provides $5M for Makolo Center


It has been reported that the European Union has dished out US$5 million towards the construction of the National Youths Center in the Makolo Village in the Koya Chiefdom, Port Loko District. Reports further states that a piece of land has already been allocated by the community people for the construction of the said centre which is expected to start shortly.  

 

US$ 850 Medical Equipment for Connaught & Cottage Hospitals


Reports monitored from local tabloids state that the Sierra Leone National Association of Manitoba in Canada with support from Canada Hope International has announced the shipment of a-40-feet container of assorted medical equipment and supplies as gift from Sierra Leonean Community in Manitoba, Canada to the Connaught and Cottage Hospitals in Freetown. According to reports, the total value of shipment expected to arrive at the Queen Elizabeth II Quay in Freetown between September 6 and 17, 2010 is more than US$850,000.

 

President Koroma to Visit Kailahun


Local tabloid reports monitored have disclosed that His Excellency the President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Dr Ernest Bai Koroma will be making a trip to Kailahun District. According to reports the trip which has been slated for a period shortly after Ramadan Celebrations was disclosed by the Chairman of the Kailahun District Council, Rtd. Captain Tom Nyuma. Reports say during his visit the president is expected to launch a maternity center project, bridge construction and other social development projects.

 

Two Rapists sent to High Court


Newspaper report monitored states that one Foday Conteh and Idrissa Kamara charged for abusing two young girls under the age of 13 have been committed to the High Court for    hearing by Magistrate Wellington. Reports say they were charged with the offence of abuse, contrary to Section 6 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Childrens Act Cap 31 of the laws of Sierra Leone.
