As a sign of honor and respect for clauses in the Rules and Regulations for the election of Presidential Candidate for the 2012 election, the Secretariat and Executive of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) on Wednesday 8th September 2010 handed over the declaration forms of the twenty-three (23) aspirants for the party, a week after close of deadline for declaration of intent to the Special Advisory Committee at the party’s National Headquarters in Freetown.

Handing over the documents to the Committee, the National Chairman John Oponjo Benjamin said the Sierra Leone People’s Party recognizes the proximity of the 2012 Presidential and Parliamentary elections for which the Party shall be nominating Presidential and Vice Presidential Candidates. He said in consideration of those elections, the SLPP is desirous to put in place an open, transparent and democratic process in the form of Rules and Regulations governing the election of its Presidential Candidate for the 2012 elections aforesaid. He said at the National Party Conference convened in Bo, from the 26-28 February 2010, the Conference mandated the National Executive to finalize and implement the aforementioned Rules and Regulations. “In recognition of Conference’s decision and its mandate to the National Executive, we promulgated the following Rules and Regulations to govern the election of the SLPP Presidential Candidate for the 2012 Presidential Election,” he stated, adding that aspirants were required to read and fully understand the Rules and Regulations with an undertaking to adhere to those Rules and Regulations by signing a Declaration Form that were addressed to the National Secretary-General and copied to the National Chairman. “This is in pursuant to the party’s Gazette Vol. CX4 of Friday 23rd July 2010 No.51, and documents such as a sealed letter of declaration of intent to contest for the position of the Party’s Presidential Candidate for the 2012 Presidential Election, a profile of the aspirant including his/her personal, professional and public life as well as the history of membership of the party and a statement of not more than five papers detailing his/her political were required,” the chairman informed. He said the same mandate was given for the documents to be in turn submitted to the Special Advisory Committee which was what the executive has done on this occasion. The documents were handed over the committee through Dr Sama Banya, former chairman of the party and member of the committee.
