Global Fund Funds Health Ministry


The Deputy Minister of Health and Sanitation, Mohamed D Koroma is reported to have disclosed that his ministry has received a grant of US$45m (Forty-five million United States Dollars) from the Global fund. According to reports the money would be used to strengthen the overall health information system, laboratory services and the leadership and coordination of health issues across the country.


Police Probe Wealth Builders

 

Newspaper reports say police are investigating the beleaguered managing director of Wealth Builders Network, Mr. Peter Ayalia who is alleged to have collected twenty-one billion leones (Le 21billion) from clients across the country. According to reports the police only discovered two billion leones (Le2bn) in the institutions bank account, something that urged the police to investigating the disappearance of the nineteen billion leones (Le 19bn) from the account. Wealth Builders are said to have reportedly failed to register their institutions with the Bank of Sierra Leone as required by law, which led to their indefinite termination to operate as a financial institution in the country. .

 

7 Die in Fire Accident

 

\A fire accident which occurred on Thursday 9th September 2010 at about 4am at Parsonage Street, Kissy Shell claimed the lives of the owner of the house, Mr. Mohamed Sesay, his eight months pregnant wife and four children. According to reports the fire which consumed the top floor of the two-storey building was attributed to emissions from a generator said to be used by the Sesay family.  The two survivors were taken to Connaught Hospital for medical treatment.  The remains of the victims were taken to Magburaka for burial.


Armed Robbers Attack Magistrate Fisher

 

Local news reports say armed robbers on Friday 10th September 2010 attacked the residence of embattled Magistrate Adrian Fisher. According to reports, the armed robbers fired several shots in order to gain entrance into the house. The incident is reported to have left the magistrates armed police security with multiple gun shot wounds in his leg, and is said to be currently hospitalized. No suspect was arrested.

 

Action for development promotes Youths  


A Non-Governmental Organisation, Action for Development-Sierra Leone has commissioned the newly reconstructed Drop-in-Centre and Medical Clinic for youths in the Grass Field Community, East of Freetown.  Councilor for the Ward, Madam Hannah Gaia is reported to have said at the ceremony that the re-opening of the centre was a big boost to her ward, being one of the facilities that the youth needed most. The centre is said to have a lot of activities such as counseling, in and outdoor games and educative film shows on HIV/AIDS.

 

 116 Students graduate From NEC School


One hundred and sixteen (116) students on Friday 10th September 2010 received certificates after a successful completion of training on electoral administration and communication skills at the Institute of Electoral Administration and Civic Education (INEACE). The training session was made possible through the National Electoral Commission (NEC) and the Sierra Leone Opportunities Industrialization Centre (SLOIC) in Bo City, Southern Sierra Leone. The training was reportedly designed to provide Sierra Leoneans with in-depth knowledge on basic electoral processes, civic education and communication skills.


Female Councilor Donates to School Children

 

Councilor Melrose Jane-During of Ward 379 in Constituency 107 within the Freetown Municipality on Saturday 11th September 20910 donated large quality of learning materials to over 300 pupils from classes 4 to 6 in various primary schools within her ward. Education officer of the Freetown City Council, Henry Fyfe is said to have congratulated the councilor for her contribution in promoting education, while he also appealed to the pupils to make proper use of the materials.

 

Education Minister Clears the Air


The Minister of Education, Youths and Sports, Dr Minkailu Bah has told journalists that he was unnecessarily lambasted in 2008 for poor results at both WASCE and BECE examinations.  Minister Bah said at the time he took office in 2007, the standard of education was not in good order so he had no reason to carry the blame. He said the system of education before was not making any improvement for which reason he said government changed the system from 6-3-3-4 to 6-3-4-4.
