In Sierra Leone, Parliament approves Police Boss & Nine others

Following the interviews conducted by the Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Public Services and Appointment on the 27th August and the 3rd September 2010 Parliament yesterday approved the newly appointed Inspector General of Police and nine other Presidential nominees.


The approved nominees include: Francis Allieu Munu as Inspector General of Police, Brigadier Robert Yira Koroma as Chief of Defence Staff of the RSLAF, Mr. Elvis J. G. Hallowell as Director General of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), Mr. Mustapha B. Abdulai as Board Member of the Sierra Leone Ports Authority, Mr. Abdul Wahab Wanu as Board Member of SIERRATEL, Mr. Mohamed Sowa Turay as Board Member of the National Asset and Government Property Commission, Mr. Joseph F. Kamara as Anti Corruption Commissioner, and Ms. Harriattu K. Sillah, Mr. Kabba F. Bangura, Mr. Alphonso A. Macaulay who will be representing disables and the youth in the National Youth Commission (NYC).


Speaking in the hall of parliament, the Majority Leader who is also the Chairman of the Committee on Appointment, Hon. Dumbuya disclosed that the ten Presidential nominees have been scrutinized and interviewed on questions ranging from their track records in Public offices, educational backgrounds, past experiences and their tax Commitments and other pertinent issues which he said is in consonance with their constitutional mandate. He expressed belief that the nominees will suitably and efficiently perform their duties.


Honorable Dumbuya also used  the opportunity Calling Specifically to the newly inspector General of Police and Chief of Defence Staff to uphold their offices mandatory in executing the duties as according to him their offices  is to keep both the internal and external Security of the Country.


For his part, Hon. Komba Koedoyoma of the SLPP who seconded the motion admonished the nominees not to be carried away by their new assignments; rather, he noted they should be result-oriented as their certification by Parliament is just a start of a long journey ahead of them, adding that the journey may have several huddles on the way. He reminded also the nominees to owe it as an obligation to report to Parliament annually their activities in their various institutions as part of their constitutional obligations. He further reminded the nominees to consider themselves as lucky and privileged among the countrys five million population to be nominated by the President and admonished them not to let the confidence reposed in them be a disappointment to the nation as a whole. He urged them to leave up the Presidents and peoples expectations as constitutional representatives in their various areas of responsibilities.


Specifically to the Anti Corruption Commissioner, Hon. Koedoyoma reminded him of his public service role and that he is not only in his new post to prosecute criminals but to also make criminals to become accountable for money stolen. He ended by commending members of the Committee for performing their work excellently.
