Residents and indigenes of Kailahun District have unequivocally called for an Easterner to this time lead the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) as flag bearer for the upcoming Presidential election in 2012. This call was made by supporters of the party during a two- day Consultative political tour over the weekend by one of the twenty-three aspirants for the flag bearer position of the party, Dr. Bu-Buakei Jabbie during which time he  declared his intention for the SLPP flag bearer to the people.

Dr. Jabbie was welcomed with pomp and fanfare by SLPP supporters of Constituency 08 which comprises Peje West, Peje Bonga, Yawai and Pengowa chiefdoms all in the Kailahun District, eastern Sierra Leone. Dr. Jabbie held several collective consultative meetings with family members, traditional elders, friends and fans as a build up to the two-day consultative meeting.

During one of the consultative meetings held at Manowa on Saturday, 11th September with Paramount Chiefs, Chiefdom Speakers, Councilors, youth women and other traditional stakeholders, the political guru said he was in his constituency to inform and consult with them on his declared intention to lead the SLPP as flag bearer for the 2012 election and that he was soliciting their support. He further informed them his audience that there twenty-three aspirants in total with origins from all parts of the country.

He said he was vying for the position because as an Easterner, a region that is considered as the stronghold of the SLPP, he deems it appropriate and necessary that this time round one of their able and competent sons emerges as the party Leader and Flag bearer and expressed confidence that with their unflinching support, “victory will be ours come 2012.”

“This is the very first time in the history of our party that strong party supporters all over the country have asked us (Easterners) to send a candidate for the leadership since the party was born in the 1950s,” he said, adding that it was therefore a big opportunity for the east to send someone that every party member will appreciate and vote for in the upcoming party National Convention in 2011.

He said it was now time for every member of the party to put hands on deck to critically analyze and scrutinize all the aspirants based on the criteria set by the party’s National body to choose someone that has the potential and the public appeal to democratically kick the APC out of power in 2012. He disclosed that among the twenty-three aspirants, six are from the eastern province, noting that all six are working in solidarity with one another.

He said he sees himself as the solution to the party’s desire to win the next election considering the tremendous role he plays within the party as reconciler. “Some if not all of the aspirants have always consulted with me on the way forward for the party and true to the confidence and trust they have in me, I have been giving them the advice that have to a great extent help up the party even as we are in opposition,” he told his enthusiastic audience.

Dr. Jabbie however admonished the people to be very careful in their decision-making and not to allow money to carry them away. He expressed similar sentiments Bunumbu on Sunday, 12th September.

Responses from Paramount Chiefs, and other stakeholders were couched around the continuous unity of the party as their only strength in ensuring their victory in 2012. The gave assurance of their unflinching support to the party and that whosoever emerges as leader, they will support, but stressed on the need for party supporters all over the country, to give an Easterner the opportunity this time round to lead the party.
